Pixel Art / [WIP] Noirman C64
« on: May 18, 2010, 03:27:42 am »

Haven't really done much pixel art in a while, so I started playing around with this. Didn't really plan any of it out, just kinda did it spontaneously. No real goal in mind (other than I wanted to do something without really 'mixing' colors, so to speak). I don't really have the most innate sense of composition, so any advice in that department (or any for that matter) would be appreciated. Also, I never owned a C64 or anything and am only really interested in it for aesthetic purposes, so if there are any spots where there are too many colors or something, lemme know, since I dunno how to check for that kinda thing automatically.

Pixel Art / No Commodore 64 Old Men

My first attempt at doing any sort of C64 artwork.

Oldest <----> Newest

Critique/Suggestions would be nice. Also, feel free to inform me of any spots where I may have used more than two colors. I think I caught them all, but I'm not totally sure.

General Discussion / Index painting?
« on: September 18, 2007, 04:43:57 pm »
I keep seeing pieces submitted to Pixeljoint nowadays that create controversy for being 'index painted'. The creators of such pieces always claim to have completely hand-pixeled them, but they often use such a high number of colors that people aren't sure how to classify them. I'm a little confused as to what index painting actually is, since I've never owned an Amiga or anything, and I'm curious as to how the process differs from what we generally regard as traditional pixel art. I mean, I SEE pixel art techniques, and it would SEEM as though the artist is still limited in color selection. Someone enlighten me.

General Discussion / Photoshop doesn't display colors correctly?
« on: August 24, 2007, 06:58:31 pm »
I've been noticing lately that Photoshop doesn't seem to be capable of correctly displaying colors (or if not Photoshop, then every other displayer of images on my computer). I first noticed this back in April when I was working on this piece:

I made this image in Promotion and since my trial expired I could no longer export as a .gif so I just went and pasted it in Photoshop. To my annoyance, however, the pasted image was a bit less saturated. However, I did not find this same discrepancy posting it in Paint, and in Photoshop when I used the Save For Web option, it exported it using the original colors as intended. So in this particular instance there was really no harm done, but I'm now finding it frustrating.

I can't easily show you what I mean, since this only affects images while they are being viewed in Photoshop and not after they are saved or print-screened. Although, while testing it out, I created an image of just an indigo-ish blue color, and upon exporting it found it to lean more towards indigo than I had intended:

So basically, what would seem to be happening is when Photoshop exports images it seems to be leaning all my tertiary colors towards relative secondary colors, if that makes sense. Anyone know what would cause this? I'm pretty sure Photoshop isn't magically able to display more colors than other programs, so I don't understand why it would do this.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Saturos Redux
« on: July 27, 2007, 02:19:39 pm »
One of the villains from Golden Sun for the GBA. This piece is a revisit of a piece I did over a year ago. I would normally wait until after I'm done before requesting comments and criticisms, but I'm too stubborn to change art after I've declared it finished.

I'm mostly concerned about the arms. I have never really learned anything about how to draw the human anatomy beyond the rules of thumb for the male facial structure, so some it might look a little wonky. Also, I haven't decided how I want to do the cape yet, nor what I want to do with the background.

Pixel Art / But really, I'm not actually your friend

Old:New:

Made this for the PixelJoint weekly contest. 9 colors. Comments and criticisms would be swell, but since the contest ends tomorrow night I would prefer them to be sometime in the next 30 hours.

Subject is John Linnell, BTW.

16 colors. EGA palette. Any suggestions/criticisms? I'm not liking that window. I want to do something with the background and have it dark, but I don't want it to be distracting.

Pixel Art / Daddy Issues (WIP)

If you saw last week's episode of House, then this may make sense to you.

(He is in a bucket of ice water outside, and that's a lollipop in his hands)

Any suggestions so far?

Pixel Art / Final Fantasy III
« on: January 23, 2007, 11:53:47 pm »
Fun little thing I did. This is kind of an inside joke, but I've been playing Final Fantasy III a little bit recently, and for fun I named my characters after me and my friends. When I told them about it THEY EXPLODED.

17 colors

Suggestions/Criticisms?
