2D & 3D / iPhone work
« on: April 17, 2010, 08:01:13 am »
I haven't posted for a while as I've been hard at work with uni and such...  But still lurk this site from time to time so for those who remember me hi again.

I've been working on an iPhone game and thought I would show off some of the art that's going into it.  The aim of the game is to bounce your character to the top of the level using trampolines you draw with your finger.

To create the art I used gimp, creating the images and animation at a high resolution then shrinking them to a lower resolution and touching them up with pixel art like techniques.

Here's main character, this shows his moving up, moving down and swapping between moving up and moving down animations.

This imp transforms into a duplicate of the player when you collide with him, forcing you to look after twice as much.  Here is the imps idle animation.

Another enemy.  This red guy destroys your trampolines when he runs into them.

The background.  This is a parallax background this shows the closest and furthest layers, another layer will likely be placed between.  As it is parallax the layers move at different speeds according to the cameras movement.

For those curious the game is made using openGL and using almost entirely c++ code with openAL and AVaudio for sounds.

2D & 3D / The good, the bad and the just plain ugly
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:21:21 pm »
For an assignment at uni me and a group have been asked to make two game prototypes each within a week.  After this we will be continuing with one prototype made by the collective of a larger group.

I'm art lead of our current group so I get to have a bit of fun.  Because of time constraints the majority of the work is of very low quality (it is for a prototype after all).  Ive done a bunch of concept art and models, here are the later I wont show the concept art but for those that are a interested it can be found
here - http://z4.invisionfree.com/pixelclass/index.php?showtopic=217&st=0

The first game prototype:

Zombie enemy model.

Player weapon model.

The second game prototype:

The ugly :P damsel in distress, not to important so no real polishing or effort put into this... sorry you have to see it.  She is wearing a paper bag by the way...

The radioactive rabbit enemy model (I only did the texture on this model)

The texture:

The boss (created using the rabbit enemy model as a basis):

Pixel Art / [WIP] 'Crunch' and a few characters to look at
« on: August 18, 2008, 04:15:47 pm »
Time to reveal what I've been doing every now and then in my free time.  These are some characters I have been working on, how far I intend to go with them is still up for debate if your lucky you will be seeing animations after I finish off the last of the details on the current ones, but no promises at this stage.

This is the main character of the set, his name is Crunch and I developed the character years ago, his design has undergone some extensive changes since then however (purple didn't seem as cool when I was 11). He is still in need of a fair bit of reworking of the guns and limbs.

The first character in this set was intended as a boss, but I am looking at scrapping him at this stage. Blue thing (Blue Ink), Red thing (Red Ink), Tongue Gunner and crawling Pink thing are all finished. The first green chicken thingos gun needs work, as does the seconds. The giant monster with dude riding is a boss again, the chair and gun are really the last few things needing work on him.

Thought it was time to get feedback, see what people think and get some idea where to go from here.

Pixel Art / Games Revisited
« on: April 10, 2008, 08:48:22 pm »
I haven't posted for aaaagggeeesss so hi everyone new and everyone old. :)

I lately have been having the erge to revisit my games that I begun/finished when I first got into game making. The idea of this piece was for a game which I attempted to make some time ago. It was meant to be a multiplayer game in which players would have to kill one another with a variety of different guns, the twist was you played as blobs!!! (yeah not that amazing) The game play was meant to be like realtime worms.

Ok, I know this piece isn't much but wanted to get as much critique as I could on it. I am somewhat satisfied with it but as it is a character sprite it needs to be as cool as possible. Yes I know it looks gritty and dead, this was deliberate as I am tired of the cute slime stereotype and wanted to make something that looked like it was going to absorb you in a grotesque evil manner.

I might later add guns, animation, etc. which will get 'glued' onto it.

The next revisited character
Copper Head

Still very WIP, hopefully will turn out more to my liking in a later update.

Pixel Art / Alien

need some critique I think as I'm fairly happy with this so far but which palette would you guys would recommend, I'm leaning towards the first one at the moment but i want it to be aesthetically pleasing to everyone not just me. I think the leg might be a bit long before the knee are there any other anatomy problems, and should i bother fixing this or is it not too drastic? I sort of want slightly odd anatomy as it's not human but I'm not sure if something like that would impede movement.

Pixel Art / Monster

7 colours so far including background looks a little flat colour wise to me i think. You might notice my planning for it is pretty terrible, I pretty much got a vague idea in my head of what i wanted this guy to look like then started working it together from that bit by bit and deciding on what looked cool when i came to it. Will probably add some more colour or at least 1 more to highlight the eyes or something, maybe for metals .

General Discussion / Copper Head
« on: March 11, 2007, 06:43:48 pm »
Interestingly it only just occurred to me to begin posting this here. This is a little pet project i have been working on for sometime. A game called copperhead, It is a platform game that draws influences from throughout the genre. The game is nearing completion as the engine is sound the bulk of the graphics complete and the game play mostly defined. So I'm posting it every where i can. Also I've been using looking at this forum a lot lately and find it funny that a forum focused on a medium that is typical in game art lacks games. Hopefully this might get a few more posts out there regarding games :D.

Demo
Demo link 2

The game does have a storyline however i have not yet implemented it as all the level structure is everywhere right now (theres only a few levels for each world done). Basically the big bad boss has stolen the precious rune of copper land, as such you have to get it back as it is causing grave disruptions in space and time... yadda yadda... finaly you face the boss and a nice twist will be at the end but you guys can wait for that :P.

The main things i need to change now include:
1. adding the remaining levels
2. creating the cut scenes
3. inclusion of some more enemies and bosses
4. some audio and graphical additions as well as ramifications
5. some minor bugs to sort out that don't really hurt but seem unprofessional to me, you might not see them

oh and because i love you guys so much

The passwords to all available demo levels (so you can truly judge the game) all on easy:

oh yer sorry its not all pixel, e.g. the backgrounds I will hopefully be changing some of this but not in the cases where it looks appropriate.
