Pixel Art / Re: my first attempt at this.

I think evilyoshi has no idea where to start with pixeling but is very interested in it and came here for advice.

So here are a few things to help get you started:
Start by poking around these links.  Read some of those tutorials, it is a great way to start.
Tools & Tutorials: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=3467.0
Top Threads with interesting advice and discussions on pixeling: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=4912.0

-If you want to make a 'retro' looking zombie, start by using a smaller canvas, something like 16x16 pixels.
-Look at reference photos.  There are tons of pictures of zombies on the internet.  Most of them are going to be very detailed so try squinting and blurring out all the details to just look at the general shape of the zombie.  What do you notice and how is this different from what you have made?
-Practice drawing in real life.  You must learn to think visually(proportion, color relation, shadowing) if you want be good at pixel art. Drawing and painting are great ways of practicing this.  Try drawing things from real life, DO NOT draw from memory.  People who can draw from memory are people who have spent years studying how to draw from real life.

Tips on this attempt:
-Save the file as a .png or .gif and post that.  Do not post screenshots.
-The head is gigantic it looks more like a dinosaur than a zombie.
-The eyeball is gigantic, probably because it is trying to fill up some of that big head.  But in real life eyeballs are pretty tiny when compared to a head.
-The body is three heads tall.  I am not sure if this is intentional or not.  But be aware that realistically a human/zombie is about 7 heads tall.-

There is much more that I could go on about with this but it is not going to be very nice and it is not worth it until you take a look at some of those tutorials and try them out.

You are brand new at trying this so don't worry about not knowing how to do things.  Just explore and have fun.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] help with sprite - space marine terminator

Well here is a try for me...  I could not resist some Warhammer 40k pixel art.  Did anyone else play Chaos Gate?  I loved that game.

This one is great. You mind if I actually use that one? I'll give you the propper credit of course. Also I've never played Chaos Gate though I really wanted to (doesnt work on xp). I am however, an avid X-Com player.

Sure, have at it!  It could probably still use a bit of tweaking, but feel free to take it as is or edit it all you like.  One thing you will notice is that the face is actually pretty much looking at you straight on and not a top down angle...  This was quick and dirty for making it recognizable, but shifting the eyes down a bit and adding some shadows near the "back" part of the helmet where it is meeting up with the suit might help give it a more top down look.

I am not actually sure if Chaos Gate was a very good game... but when I was like 13 my best friend and I spent endless hours playing it.  Also we spent a good amount of time playing Ultima Online... those were the glory days for having no responsibility and  nothing better to do with my time.

I used the image here http://www.critical-hits.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/sm-terminator-squad.gif as my reference for the terminator face.

Pixel Art / Re: Second Try For Tree
« on: November 26, 2009, 08:24:22 am »
I think you should probably stop studying how to make pixel trees... and take a look at how shading works in general, because the rules of shadows and light apply to every medium... regardless of if you are painting, drawing or pixelating.

image taken from: http://studiochalkboard.evansville.edu/s-chiaro.html
This is Chiaroscuro, it is a technique used for properly shading everything.  This is what a sphere with a single light cast on it will look like in REAL LIFE.  You might be able to use this to imagine what other shapes might look like.  OR  You can set up your own examples if you get a light bulb and an object (It is easiest if the object is a solid color so you can really pay attention to the shadows.)  Maybe practice by drawing a still life and carefully concentrating on where shadows go and how dark certain shadows are compared to other shadows in the still life.  After you have played around with this enough, you will be able to just know what the shadows will look like for almost any object.

Think about how these rules for shading might apply to pixels and trees.

Here is an art guide specifically telling you how to draw foliage in chiaroscuro:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2101857_draw-foliage-chiaroscuro.html

If you examine Schrib's trees you will see that they do a pretty good job of following the rules of chiaroscuro.

Also maybe just consider going outside and looking at some real trees. Or using google image search.  Do not be afraid to use a REAL LIFE reference when you are making something.
