Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Coder Dept. Weapons

Shouldn't you just get rid of those green pixels in the holes so that they look like holes and not like knobs? There shouldn't be substance there for the green pixels to be bouncing off of, so that's why they don't look like holes.

Crappy Edit to demonstrate:

Thank you for the enlightening photo. In any case, the op's white lines are spaced to far apart In his crosswalk.

The crosswalk looks off because crosswalks aren't shaped like ladders, they're usually just parallel equidistant lines. But, I'm not exactly a world traveler so maybe there are ladder-walks

You still haven't fixed the black outlines on your backlit pillars, nor have you added the shadows that they should be casting, the two things everyone keeps telling you to change.

Pixel Art / Cars and Clouds - a gift for a loved one [WIP]
« on: November 28, 2009, 02:51:38 am »
So I've been working on this on and off again for 2 weeks. I've finally made some headway and now I'm steamrolling my way to the finish so I can finally give this away.

This is my first time doing both clouds and dithering on this scale. Both were done based on photographic references. The clouds are from here http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:z2TX4pXWteE5sM:http://www.hobbyistsoftware.com/Initiate-backgrounds/Clouds_320.jpg
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:x3_yqCnGbpVzhM:http://sugarmtnfarm.com/blog/uploaded_images/SkyCloudsBlueScatted1832-706827.jpg
and the car is from photos I took of my own car on my phone.

The clouds on the top right were my first attempt, and I like how they came out, very wispy. The clouds on the bottom are where I tried to reproduce my technique on a larger scale. Honestly I think it looks way better than anything I thought I was capable of, but I think the shapes are kind of off, so please help without referring to more references. The cloud on the top left is just an undithered WIP in progress that I think looks nice anyway for like a more cel-shaded style piece, but I will be dithering that SOB once I get to work on this again tomorrow.

I'm considering the car to be done  (in my mind), except for the outlines, I'll fix those.

The letters are just place holders right now, I haven't decided if they're going to be paint or mud or soap or what (probably mud) but they are the center piece of the picture so they stay.

PLS C+C, especially the clouds and dithering.

Even if it does stick around as a stationay object, it should still have some kind of disappearing animation, like turning into particles/smoke and dissipating. I mean, as long as it doesn't just pop out of existance, because the human eye doesn't like it when stuff does that and it ruins the suspension of disbelief.

ANother thing you could try is have it twist into itself and disappear.

Pixel Art / Re: WIP - Wood Laminate floor

Wow, that technique is brilliant ( and painfully obvious in hindsight).  I had started at the vanishing point and drawn down, which I now see is the wrong way to go about things. That animation is very helpful. it's times like this where my  complete lack of formal art training is a real hindrance. I think it would be best now to just remake the floor, it should be a lot easier And faster now that I have my palette and my texture.

So this is what I've got so far. The white space is how big the full backdrop will be, the colored part is for the mockup that I'm making this for.  Contrast slightly decreases as it moves away from the viewer. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the sheen on there. It's meant to be a boxing gym floor, so it doesn't need to be anywhere near as shiny as the picture that was posted above.

Actually, now that I look at it, it doesn't really look like laminate at all. But I really like the way it looks, and I think that if I tried to do draw those super-skinny planks with hardly any detail in them, it would be extremely tedious and would no-doubt look very boring and have no character to it, so I'm gonna stick with this new type of wood floor.

Pixel Art / WIP - Wood Laminate floor

Trying to make a wood/vinyl laminate floor for a fighting game backdrop, but I'm having trouble nailing the texture.

Right now I've got the dithering on the two tiles on the left vs. the pattern on the middle tile. I'd like to know which one looks better and how I can improve them. I'm really bad at detail work like this and on this kind of scale, and because it's a fighting game with a fixed vanishing point I don't think I have the option of making a tile set.

Wow, that' a very useful edit, I will be sure to use that technique the next time I have to make a run/walk animation.
