Well, im using blender right now, and im trying to find out how to turn the anti alias or interpolates  (whatevers making the texture blurry insted of pixely) off.

ive been trying to do this for 3 hours but googles no help today D':

Texture Buttons (F6) -> Map Image -> Interpol

Assuming you're using an outside image as texture.. I don't know much either, sorry if this is no help.

ey.

I think the essence of cartoony looking stuff is that everything is simplified. So IMO you shouldn't use too many colors — I think a lot of cartoons even only use one for skin most of the time. Also, from that, dithering should be avoided because besides creating a third color, it adds a detailed, textured feel to things.

Have you found out about Andrew Loomis's books yet? They help a lot with drawing figures and heads, and many people seem to leap very rapidly to awesome drawing skills from studying them. I haven't had that success and am still struggling with basics, but comparing my drawings from 2 years ago when I started with them and now there's still a lot of difference.

There's a note by ptoing on skin shading: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=56.msg808#msg808

I did an edit where I tried applying those and balls01's to your picture and exaggerated the shading some:

and then that one edited for less warm and less contrasting colors:

also, it's recommended to present images as PNG or GIF around here I think..

I think one of the main issues with the inside is that in great amount it uses the same color as the front of the chest, so they look like they are on the same plane. In this edit I changed too many things to irrational personal preference and I regret that, but I do think you should use more contrasting colors. The back of the chest also seemed to be higher than the front so I changed the former to be the same height; it looked like the chest had no bottom of its own, to me.

I think for a more mature look the jaw needs to be more prominent, the eyes more oblique and the nose bigger. Also the structure of cheeks and well of the whole face should be less round.

I hope this helps.

Hello. I think you should practice perspective so you can see better what people are/were essentially getting at in their critiques. At least to me that seems to be your main problem at the moment..

Thanks for replying.

Cool, but shouldn't the rod be bent the other way?

I really don't know what I am doing, do I.. Thanks for pointing it out.

It's a special erectarod.

I like the guy, but the boat looks weird and the water is a bit pre-school style. I mean it can work if you have a clear design to go that way, but now it's conflicting. Google some boats and make it sink deeper, tilt it a bit to tell us that the guy has weight to him. Make the point where the fishing line meets the water visible to the viewer for more options to make it interesting. Make it a lake setting so you can put some tree line in the bg and vegetation in the water. Aaaand, do leave the dithering and antialiasing for the last. First work on the fundamentals. Those things don't really make a picture, they just add to the finish when you do have something that's great without them.

I tried adapting it to your suggestions:

and just realized I missed the fishing line part.

Update (08/12/15):

I'm not sure what to do with those plants. I feel they're attracting too much attention with their little outlined details and if I leave them as green blobs they don't look like plants.

First of all, I'm sorry for my last thread. This time I tried making the subject something less abstract so I can get feedback.

I plan to animate this, as long as I can do that and keep a calm feeling.

Critiques are wanted; I'll try not to disappear after I get a reply. Besides that.. can someone share good sources for reading about dithering and anti-aliasing?

Thought I'd start trying to improve in pixel art too. I started this just as training. I'll try to refine it and animate the characters as I go.

By the way, would you guys say I'm decent enough to get some short jobs as a pixel artist, or do I need to improve a lot still? I think I spent about an hour on this. Is that too slow?
