Pixel Art / Re: Progression Thread
« on: August 17, 2017, 07:21:39 pm »
I tried to do the wood grain on the handles, but was unable to get it to look right. I think the weapon sizes are a little too small for any kind of grain to look right.

Pixel Art / Progression Thread

Super pleased with how this sword turned out, especially seeing as it was my first attempt at it.

Improved Version

This one isn't 100% finished as I'm not sure I actually like the way it came out. The wrap around the pole was a pain in the ass to do and something just feels off about it.

So, what I've decided to do is use this thread as a way to show my progression. These three pieces are the very first projects I've finished aside from a tree. I can already tell I'm improving.

Ah, right, okay. I'll post some stuff there once I'm actually satisfied with the cloud. I'm still working around with it, but I can't get it right and I'm having a hard time finding a decent tutorial.

General Discussion / ANIMATING RAIN

First off, I believe this is the right place to ask this, but if it's not; I apologize.

Anyway, I'm trying to work on my first animation. It's fairly simple, just a rain cloud with, well... rain. I plan on adding a lightning strike as well, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to animate the rain. Maybe rain isn't the easiest thing to animate, especially for a first time thing, but I've been learning different ways to do clouds, so I took the lazy route. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and btw, I'm using PyxelEdit

I'm not entirely sure. I would either forget to click the "I'm not a robot" captcha, click the back page, do what I needed to do and then it would tell me that I had already posted and that I may have clicked the refresh button. It was probably human error and not the site's fault.

How's it going, everyone?

Before I get into anything, I wanna say that the uhm... pool for pixel art forums/communities isn't a very large one... at least not from what I could find. Out of the two that I actually bothered to look at, this was the one that drew me in the most, mainly because it's a lot better looking. I absolutely love the style and colors.

So, yeah, with that said... I've been a "graphic designer" for about 7-8 years now and up until about a week, -- maybe a week and a half ago -- I absolutely HATED pixelart. When it came to pixelated games, I avoided most of them like the plague(Terraria and Project Zomboid being the only exceptions.) I rarely stopped to appreciate any form of pixelated art and when I did, it was to do nothing but scoff at it. Now, here I sit, infatuated by the style so much that I've purchased two different pixel art based programs and every time I try to pull myself away, I get sucked right back to it. I've been trying to make literally anything lately, and the only thing I've managed to do was follow a tutorial on how to create a tree (http://imgur.com/pgoHYi9) that took far longer than I'm comfortable admitting, but it did come out quite nicely, I think.

Aaaaaannyway, the main reason I'm getting so into it is because I figure it'd be the easiest way to create a game, which I've wanted to do for a very long time, plus static images made solely of pixels can be quite beautiful. It's definitely something I would love to get into more, even if a game never comes out of it. Just being able to learn different techniques and what not would be enough for me. I just want to be able to one day sit down and create something that other people would love, you know?

I've done a ton of research, looking through tutorials and all that good stuff, so I've got the basic idea of what to do, but if anyone has some further, "off the top of the head" tips, it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm a quick learner.

One more thing, if I should ever become more than decent at pixel art and decide to make a game, what program would I go about getting to do so? Is there a specific game engine geared towards pixels/sprites?

Also, and completely random... this took far too many tries to get to post.
