I don't like that castlevania "running" animation somehow. What I am missing most, is the "bouncing" of the whole body. Right now, it looks like he is walking, not running. To make it more visible, I have increased your animation playback speed here.

yours / mine

I see what you mean. Thanks for opening my eyes here.

I sped him up to 200ms per frame, then I changed frames 1,4 to be 1 pixel higher, frames 2,5 I brought himn 1 pixel higher and reigned in his back leg one pixel so it was still touching the ground (im fond of it). Result:

Something that I came across yesterday that might be of interest to you is this thread by Conceit:

ha, pretty clever stuff. Looks like just as much work figuring out how to make 4 frames look like more though.

edit with slightly more downplayed legs - and 2 changed keyframes for the foot plant to not be at extension length

So lately I've been goofing around with animating things for practice. So I took Simon from NES castlevania, used the palette/scale, and made a guy (not an edit but it might as well be) that looks pretty similar I think - just in a full 6 frame run. I used axel from SOR2 as a reference once I got lost. I actually spent a bunch of time trying to figure out how to cheat and do a simpler 4-5 frame one, but I just couldn't make anything that didn't look horrible. Prolly spent 3 days trying different things, getting the arms in the wrong spot, legs mixed up, etc.

I scrapped a larger, 8 color sprite before this that was the same thing because I just get overwhelmed by blobbing things in at that scale and it was taking too long. ;p So one thing that is really bothering me that I couldn't fix - no head bob. I couldnt figure out how to get it to look right.

I want do more with it, make a version where he is holding a 2h sword or something - so I'm looking to refine this if I can. C+C is what I'm after.

This thread is pure win Arne. I couldn't resist making a little edit of one of your mario guys. I tried to make a goblin as well but I think he needs to be thicker to read correctly, not sure.

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread here. Just was inspired by this thread to make these. Animated today:

Nice work. I like your overall presentation with the HUD and everything.

- I would personally like to see the "noise" reduced on the sprites. Backed out the enemy ships are somewhat confusing to look at, the wings look too much like the afterburners, etc. Work on defining some detail/shapes that stand out so they don't look as flat. I also don't think the grey outlines are going to pay off very well for you either.

Ok, phew. So I decided to try something a bit harder today. I was looking at this screenshot of sor2 here:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/genesis/streets-of-rage-2/screenshots/gameShotId,111937/

.. and I kind of liked the way his legs looked so I started doodling in graphics gale, well, I kinda messed it up at first so he looked like he was falling backwards.. and I just went with it.

Montage!

and finally

You can see just how sloppy my process is. My color picking is TERRIBLE, but I tried harder to optimize the pallette compared to previous sprites I've made. Obviously, I lack the traditional art skills so the perspective and anatomy might be a bit wonky - I tried to get that book by Loomis today but Borders was out so I will work on that part some more as I go.

C+C is more than welcome here.

-thanks guys, peace

- I like the overall character on the new one here alot, I think it fits better.
- There is something bugging me about the way that sword is coming out the back though, like it's out of position.
- How about some kitty claws? meow? =)

So I sat down the last couple days and started playing around in GraphicsGale again. I came back to this site, poked around, and noticed the last time I posted was a little over 2 years ago. Yikes. GF, Kids, bought a house, basically I don't remember the last 2 years whatsoever - it all seems like yesterday. So I went back through my old posts and made sure my images were working again, and here I am. I think the last thing I was working on was mabey a bit too ambitious for my skill level - the edits I got crushed my soul they were so good - so I'm gonna try some simpler stuff I think.

I was looking at the feature chest post on here about the C64 palette and wanted to screw around with it some -
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=4306.0

I found this website with some C64 golden axe screenshots -
http://www.mobygames.com/game/golden-axe/screenshots

After an hour of fiddling or so I came up with this guy using a few colors out of the palette ptoing posted -

then

then ended up with

By the end I kinda realized I shaded it a bit too much, looking at the screenshot here, the guy was straight up 3 colors, black, dark color, light color, and I wanted to add a grey of some kind for mabey the belt/boots. So I'm not sure what I want to do at this point - should I strip out the wasted 4th color I used and stick to the style I was going for, or should I use a 4th color and try to get more out of it?

I am looking for some guidance here so feel free to drop some comments if you want. =) Other than that, I'm happy to see that this site is still rocking, love you guys!

For fun I made a giant guy and threw some random colors down on my other one just to see how it would look.

meh

I kinda like him, I should animate him so he can swing that thing.

Think I need to work on my color picking skills and stop grabbing them from all over.
