Pixel Art / Perspective Help!
« on: March 05, 2018, 02:06:59 am »
I made this hut! I am really happy with the colors and the style, but I am having a hard time nailing the perspective, especially on the roof. I am trying to go for a 3/4 perspective, but I think the roof looks like it is viewed from the front.

Makes perfect sense, thanks!

I am looking for gradual transition form day to night, but not necessarily concerned about the change of direction of light, and capturing different colors of dawn/dusk.

My question is more about color theory I think. I am asking how would I create a 'night' palette, given a 'day' palette.

General Discussion / Day Night Cycles in Pixel Art

How would one go about creating day night cycles for pixel art? After creating a mockup of a scene for example, how can I implement a shader or a filter to accurately depict how the scene would look at nighttime?

Thank you for the detailed answer, it is really helpful. The tutorial looks really useful, I'll study it as soon as I get the time.

General Discussion / Saturation Shifting
« on: October 06, 2017, 03:33:30 am »
I have a good understanding in hue shifting in pixel art now. I have still have two questions regarding shading though:

- Does saturation always go up as the shades get darker? Is the saturation shift always necessary, should it be subtle or really noticable?

- How does environment lighting affect hue shifting? I normally hue shift from purple(darkest) to yellow(brightest), but does this only applied to environments lit by sunlight? What if my sprite is illuminated with a blue or purple light?

Pixel Art / [WIP][CC]Working with a limited palette
« on: June 12, 2017, 05:58:27 pm »

I am experimenting with working with a limited color palette these days. I am really intrigued by dawnbringer's 16 color palette, but I feel so restricted with so few colors, yet I have seen people do amazing things with them. I wanted to make a glass ball with a vibrant red liquid inside, and I am not very happy with my initial attempts. I would appreciate some tips on using a limited palette in general, and some help specific to this image.

Thank you for the feedback Curly, I tried to tweak the image a bit.

* Played with the saturation values to make the character more saturated and the background less so.
* Redid the roof tiles. Not sure if I am satisfied with it though.
* Added more shading to the house.
* The character sprite is mirrored when facing right, so the light source moves from top left to top right. Isn't mirroring sprites how most games handle moving characters?

Thank you for the reply! That is a good observation, I noticed it also when you mentioned. I always try to use top right as my light source, but I agree with you on the roof tiles.

Pixel Art / Need some feedback on my game art!
« on: February 10, 2017, 09:38:10 pm »

Hello guys,
This is an image from a game I am developing and I am looking for some feedback to amp up my pixel art skills. This image is composed by many different assets, so the objects are not static. (So, I'm not sure if I can implement the campfire as a light source etc.). Comments on the overall image (color palette, composition etc.), as well as feedback on individual sprites would be greatly appreciated!
