Portfolios / [Portfolio] Tim Reedy - Pixel Art/Animation

Hey Pixelation! My name is Tim, for the past 5 years or so I've worked as a successful latte artist (steamfist.tumblr.com) but I've grown very, very tired of the food service industry and need to take a break from it for health and personal reasons- in the meantime I have decided to try my hand at another passion of mine; pixel art and animation. I've been in love with video games for as long as I can remember, I grew up playing collect-a-thon platformers and RPGs but have since grown to enjoy all types of games and I think I'm finally ready to start working on some myself. So far most of my focus has been on spritework but I've been working my way into tileset and asset creation bit by bit. I don't have a terribly extensive portfolio just yet but I'm trying new things every day to improve my skillset and hopefully find enough work to get a foot into the industry. I'm fairly quick, extremely dedicated, and take consistent communication and criticism very seriously. I'll be updating this post over time with new work as I go but here are some examples of what I've done so far:
 Singles/Small Sprites

8x8

16x16

Animated

Dailies/Misc

Mockup

If you'd like to work together on something you can reach me @DekuBub on twitter - email ( tim.o.reedy@gmail.com ) and PM are fine as well. Thank you for taking the time to check out my work and have a wonderful day :)

Pixel Art / [C+C] Link Sprite
« on: June 08, 2016, 03:48:00 pm »

Hi Pixelation! :)
I'm about a month into learning pixel art and I just found this wonderful site! This here's a little sprite of Link in his WiiU/NX duds I put together for Pixel Dailies recently, I've been working on improving my color selection and hue shifting this week but I think I still have a long ways to go.  Any tips on what I can pay better attention to on my next piece?

Hey there! That's a pretty nice lookin' strider sprite! When you're working in super duper low res like this it can be really difficult to portray small details with accuracy. One thing I'd recommend that might help your sprite read a little better is hue shifting, it's a method of selecting colors that can help immensely when you're preparing a palette for a piece or trying to unify/add depth to a scene. In my opinion, the lower the res, the more important your color decisions become. There are some nice tutorials for the method on DA and youtube you should check out. I like the way you've implied perspective in the lower body but I think shifting to a darker, slightly more saturated blue would be a better option than black to push the right leg back in space; same with parts of the scarf, the black pixels make the light source tough to read. The arm is throwing me off a little too, the motion effect on the bottom seems too saturated and the way it's angled makes it so I can't tell if it's supposed to be moving up or down. All in all though, I think this is a pretty cool piece, there are definitely a lot of areas you can improve on but it's instantly recognizable as Strider and I'm positive you'll be able to spot more things you want to change about your pixel work the more you practice. I'll attach a version with a couple edits so you can see the difference :)  Keep on keepin' on!
