Pixel Art / Overorld sprite + portrait character set

For context, here are examples of finished sets:

And here are WIP pieces:

It's supposed to be hooded character entangled in vines with a flower inside the hood sticking out a bit. I'm not sure if the flower looks good enough and how to make the big flat blobs of blue and purple less flat on the portrait, so I'd like to hear some advice on those mainly, if you catch other things mention it as well :)

I decided to scrap the animation and rather focus on the sprite itself and recolors.

Made it more clear that the gun is actually a grapple hook (was hard to see on this background). Pants are less baggy. Aaand some recolors, thoughts?

Design a sprite of an original character, then create at least two alternate colour schemes or outfits for that character.

32x32 limit for each sprite. Before I make more I want to make sure the proportions and animation are right, etc.

Left one is base character.

What do you think?

Yep, clouds are cool, someone else drew them :/. I'm allowed to use them however http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/64402.htm

Alright some quick changes

How's it now?
Oh, also the game is going to get bizarre and unsettling in some places (I hope I can pull that off :/ ) so some weirdness is intentional. For example look at the 3rd pic in original post while listening to this which is going to be soundtrack of this area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCue1ZwsPRE makes more sense now ;) or does it :0

I'm not sure what to do with the 4th one, I guess I'll have to stare a bit at some metal mashine-y sci-fi levels.

I'm developing this game as a hobby, using (mostly) NES palette because I don't feel skilled enough with coloring wizardry.

(Ignore those misplaced tiles, my autotile script is not perfect) Does it look good, is it readable? (especially the last one with turrets). The http://i.imgur.com/gFvrG5z.jpg > player is the only outlined object for readability. I want the  game to look rather cold, I avoid using yellow, red and orange, does it work out?

Here are the 2 main characters of my game:

Melan - the player character

I like his sprite so it's probably gonna stay. I'm not sure about the portrait however. He's supposed to look sort of lifeless and bleh.

Holly - she stays with you during most of the game, (her sprite is drawn where player was 1 sec. ago)

I'm pretty happy with her design and colors, but again, not sure about the portrait.

For reference and context,(where and how I am going to use the sprites) here's screenshot from Tess (not my game)
