General Discussion / Re: Learn how to create your own mobile phone game

Good enough, and I've given you guys a lot of time to do the necessary graphics and I’m assuming that those of you who has not done anything up until today, are not feeling like continuing at all.

But the rest of us, are going forward!

Next step would be to install the necessary tool. You need NetBeans with the Mobility pack! These tools are FREE of course, developed by Sun, and very good. You also need to download the SpaceBat source code! You’ll find everything you need here: http://www.megaman-newhorizon.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=744&sid=c83f14ca2689a5cafc433b0f4e3b79f8
(You may need to login to reach the page, because this source code is very valuable and we don’t want just anyone to download it, but we will continue the tutorial here so no worries!)

Next update (here in this thread) will be this weekend, so I hope you’ll be ready! I will take your graphics, modify the code using your graphics and show you how it’s done!

most mobile games are small enough that only 1 artist could do all the graphics.. i dont understand why you're requesting people to get into teams.
Also, shouldnt this be more focused towards the programming aspect of making a mobile phone game.. i think most of us here already have a handle on the art side of things..
how do we know that you won't simply take our art and use it in your own games?..
Good questions!

I want you to set up teams, but a team can have between 1 and several members. Ifyou can handle everything yourself, then announce yourself as a team. This is done because we will be making one game per team and not one game per person, and I hope there will be less teams than people.

Those people who know me know that I am a professional developer, and I do not steal graphics. If I need to make a game myself then I make it myself (I am a decent senior spriter) and when I don't feel like creating sprites myself I hire people to do it. Sohei and Fabian are two spriters that I found here on Pixelation that have been working for me for several months now, and got paid quite well for each job... and they're probably the best spriters I've seen :)

So to answer your questions: No, I will not take your graphics and use it in my own game. I don't do such dishonest things. But the project does not require that you submit anything beautiful. I want you to use your own stuff because I want to teach you how to update the game with your own stuff. For all I care, you can borrow something from the internet if you like, just as long as it's not something I'm already using in my game.

Lysek is kinda quirky and his first language isnt english, but he is not dishonest...if you're interested go along with this.
All true, thank you!
And you will end up with your own Mobile Phone game, you have my word.

I would love to follow along with this but can't say I'd be able to participate in the format you are suggesting.  I just had a baby, moved, and started work as a dishwasher at a diner so I don't have the freetime or availability to be apart of a team as most here might.  But this sounds to be an invaluable lesson that could lead to filling a portfolio for a career someday perhaps.  So I'm hoping that you'll post up resources for those not chiming in with set teams to follow along with.
Take your time, and tag along at your own speed. We are in no hurry, and I will help each team at their own tempo. But I have quite a bit of know-how to share... which may turn out valuable if you use it right. Yes, your portfolio may indeed grow...

I want try this do we need special programs for the programing?
Yes, but they are all free, and I will set up easy-to-follow visual guides in PDF format that you may install and use those tools without ANY problems, just follow my lead!

So... correct me if I'm wrong, but we have 3 TEAMS then?

TEAM 1:
* Raytheon

TEAM 2:
* Argyle

TEAM 3:
* aregon810

First of all you (each TEAM) will need to create the following things:
1. One background 320x320 (your own, or simply borrow a background from the internet, and if you have problems, let me know and I'll help out)
I used this myself for once:

2. One hero sprite, a ship like this for example:

3. Two (or more) enemies, like these:

..and when you're all done, please post them here!

After that, we'll start by updating the SpaceBat game with your graphics!
Borrow graphics from the internet if you don't want to make it yourself!

Hi guys! I’m so sorry for being a way for… a week without posting. A small disaster happened last Friday. My hard-drive crashed and everything, the whole partition, got damaged beyond repair… and our technicians don’t even know what happened.

Fortunately, I made a backup just a few days before, and lost NOTHING! You got to love backups in such times… Anyway, it’s taken me a few days to set everything back as it was, so I’ll be able to take this project to the next step sometime this upcoming weekend!

First of all, I won't just add my tutorials and let me thread stand still... I will post one step of the tutorial at the time, and guide each project member through it.

We will start with mobile phone programming! Those of you who will have the strength to follow me through this project will end up with a mobile phone game. We will do two types of games for mobile phones:
1.    A Space Invader clone
2.   A Super Mario / MegaMan / Platform game  type of clone

And those of you who do a good job will be selected for the next project after that: GameBoy Advance programming, just like me and my team did for this project: http://www.megaman-newhorizon.com/roa.php

I will only select people who complete the mobile phone projects to get the chance of receiving our unique GameBoy Advance game engine with source code. And just like for this project, I will guy you to teach you how to use it!

PS! Simply try to make teams as you see fit, and post them here. However, if you find noone, and feel you lack a skill, like spriting, the worry not. I am here to help out, and you will succeed as well as anyone else. Teams are importnat, whether you're working woth someone or have a one-man-team, because of different ideas. You will probably like to go in different directions, so only make a team with someone who wants the same things as you do!

Since this is Pixelation, I don’t think making sprites should be a problem for any of you guys, but remember that any sprite will do. You can even use google to find some sprites and background to borrow, if you don’t feel like making it yourself, as long as you have something to work with!

Trolleybuses : Wonderful, “Splerg” it is!

Jakten: Welcome aboard!

The first task for each team is to create some graphics, because you will use it as the firs think you do in your game. You need:
1.   One background, 320x320 pixels
2.   One hero ship or something similar
3.   About 2 enemy sprites!

Let me make a few things clear... My request is NOT a request for spriters to help me out. What I'm trying to do is to offer my help to you.

If there are any spriters who don't know how to make a mobile phone game then I'm willing to help them along and lead them through the process until they can continue the work without my help.

So, the project will require some programming, BUT with the source code I'm offering even the person with NO programming experience will be able to get a game running. When we are finished, you will have a game of your own, that can be downloaded into a real mobile phone and played. Spriting skills are required... When we are finished through the different steps of my planning, you'll be working on your own without needing help from me. My goal is to help people and make sure you learn something cool and can continue with your own projects. However, I will always be available to help out even once you are a professional mobile phone developer.

The first step will be to start easy. In the first step we'll simply modify my own game, a space invaders clone called SpaceBat. We will change it's graphics, learn how to prepare graphics and make it work with the course code I provide.

Once we are done with this Space Invaders clone, we will move to another game I made, a platform game, something similar to Super Mario, which you will be able to remake into a MegaMan game or whatever platform game you like...

The first we have to do is to divide you guys into several teams or one large team. If someone wants to work on his own, then that's ok. And those of you that want to work together, can do that as well. Each team will need to make:
1. Minimum 1 background in the size of 320x320 pixels
2. One hero ship
3. Minimum 2 enemies

So... what teams do you want to belong to? And what name would you like to give your game?

Hi

My name is Michal (Lysekoid) and I'm a professional game developer. I had this idea that I’d like to try out. I would like to create some tutorials and teach non-programmers, especially very talented spriters and graphics artists, how to create their own mobile phone games.

What would you guys thing on that? Would anyone here be interested? I will give away my own JavaME source codes and take you step by step through the different procedures. When we are done with the tutorial, you will have a game in your hands that will contain your graphics, which you modified and worked on, and that can be run on a real mobile phone!

Anyone interested? I need one or a few people who’d have the will to take this all the way in order for us to succeed!

Eriance finished the last maverick, namely Hellcry Lional. I've updated the picture as you can see. Don't worry though, Lional's deisgn is identical to the old picture so you don't have to redo any sprites!

That sounds like an extremely unprofessional way to make a game (what with aesthetic consistency, art design and so on) and Pixelation is not here to provide you with sprites. If you want to hire one or more of the pixel artists showcasing their work in this thread, feel free to PM them with your offers. However the activity here is for its own sake and it will not be confused with 'Lysekoid's artist recruitment pool'.
I thought it was a fun idea, that's all. I ment no disrespect. Neither did I want to upset anyone. Sorry!

But I'll take your advice and ask someone here through PM instead...

Hi guys,

... this is truly amazing work! I've been spriting since 1998 but I'm not even close to anything like this...
