Alright, made some shadows darker, highlights brighter. Added highlights to the cloth as well.

Pixel Art / Equip slot icons. Advice?
« on: November 22, 2015, 09:49:38 pm »
I want a metal filigree look. I want to add detail but I'm worried it will ruin the readability of the icons. Eventually there will be a ring and belt icon as well.

Just wanted to point out that he didnt want it rendered/finished he wanted to know what his errors were before doing that himself.  Plus the dithering is super overkill.

Got carried away, sorry.

The legs are definitely the weakest part. I would try to differentiate the thickness of the thighs and lower legs slightly, especially that left leg. Right now it's almost the same thickness all the way through. Ditch my dithering and add some folds to the pants like IrresponsibleFreelancer says.

I definitely agree with Roach's edit, letting the poncho rest on the body naturally. Unless you're going to animate it to billow constantly.

Stick to detailing the biggest differences in shade like Roach did. This is too small to be making ripples in fabric. They look like painted spots, not shadows.

Thank you for feedback.

Here is new piece. I still think it is a little bit too small. What do you think?

It took me a while to make this. I'm just afraid that if I go bigger, it might took me too long, as I need entire game world same standard.

The texturing doesn't fit the aesthetic of your previous images imo, which are what I think you should stick to if you want your game's art style to be consistent. I think you should keep things fairly "solid" like you were before. You probably only need 3 tones for each material (mid, highlight, shadow).

Add the bucket and rope and it should look pretty good.

The two biggest problem I found:

-Different pieces of armour are difficult to tell apart.
-Parts don't line up correctly. In the image I used the knees as a measuring point.

That's what I get for eyeballing it. Everything should line up now.

I'm going to work on outlines and add a deeper shade of red to define the parts.

I like the minimalism but what little shading you have needs to respect a light source. The tree in your first picture makes it look like the light source is the ground, heh.

When shading a tree you generally don't want the shadows to be round. You want shadows at the fringes of clusters of leaves, opposite the light source. Also bear in mind a tree casts a shadow on it's own trunk when a light source is above it.

I like how the pigs are wearing underwear for some reason. Just enhances the absurdity.

Not sure if you considered it finished but it could use shading. You might prefer a simple rendition so apologies if that's not your style.

I didn't want to do anything too radical with colors so there's a lot of dithering.

All the colors have midtones and highlights now.

Added two darker skintones for shading.

Made a nose.

Added a pixel to the white of each eye so it looks a little less jagged.

Shaded under eyebrows.

Made the shape of the hood(?) a little more defined.

Feet one pixel "taller". Rounded off the right foot.

Highlighted black areas with the background grey.

The pants could probably be shaped to follow a slightly more dramatic musculature with some ripples added, like a pair of tight jeans (if that's what you're going for). Right now they look a little tube-like.
