Pixel Art / Re: [C+C] Another low-res RPG character

Hey guys, thanks very much for your comments! I see what you mean about there being too much complexity in colour where it doesn't really fit. If I remember correctly sprites like Sonic for example only ever had like three colours at most, and that worked a treat.

To be perfectly honest I didn't get the colour ramp quite right, revisiting that will likely clear up a few things. I'll also have a dabble at adding some different expressions, that should bring a bit of soul to the character as Lord_Ginzao suggested. :)

Thanks again, massively appreciated.

Hey everyone,
just because it's nowhere near Christmas I decided to have a bash at making a pretty standard top-down RPG based character. Obviously there are hundreds in the world, but you can't beat trying out something new:

I wondered if I could possibly get some feedback on how things 'generally' look, be it anatomy or key placement of eyes, etc. At this stage I'm just tinkering with various types and quite enjoyed where this one was going so thought I'd follow it up.

Anything you can give me would be massively appreciated.

And, as always, stay classy.

Cheers

Potentially looks too busy now, but I thought I'd have a go at texturing the shape out a bit to see the result:

I think more research / reference is required really. But thought I'd post up anyway :)

Cheers

Ah nuts, so some how I've fixed one issue somewhat and created another couple... perhaps now's a good time to take the best of both and move further forward with that one.

Thanks for the feedback wzl, I'll keep at it. :)

o/

So I decided to pop up a quick example of the various amendments I've been tinkering with. The backgrounds are a little closer to what I'm after, but they still need properly fleshing out rather than just being some generic sort of colour:

The main changes have been adding more shape, a darker outline to the sprite and a bit more sureness in colour placement. I'm not totally sure that the outline is a good thing, I mean sure it makes the shape stand out a little more, but it almost looks... I don't know, too deliberate perhaps?

I kept the original design on there also just as a comparison. Would love to hear / see your thoughts if you've got time, thanks very much chaps! :)

haha, nah feel free to have at it! It's a real privilege to have someone bring your own work to life. I see what you did with the subtle animations, they look pretty effective to be honest!

I wonder how hard it is to make that 'distant shimmer' that you see on hot evenings... I'll have to look in to that. I'm guessing it's just a case of switching hues over time in the same place or something?

Hey guys,
thanks for the further advice. It's really helped things along actually as last night I sat down and started thinking things through a little more and sketched them out on paper first (really made it easier to put things in order).

The more of this I did, the more the original ship design felt a little too flat and not really what I was after anyway, so since then have been working on knocking together some other silhouettes. Nothing really finished yet but I think they look a lot more exciting and give across the approach of 'power, speed and agility'. Which is what you'd want in a situation when you're on your own stuck in a giant fight against a bunch of dudes who just want to watch the world burn.

Colour-wise and readability I'm still struggling with a little however, but I'll post up a few more variations when they're ready (hopefully tonight).

Cheers guys!

You don't need to make a new post every update. Just edit your last one.

I know the latest one is "naked" but I'm not sure you meant to imply this...

You may want to remove the square cluster at his pelvis. Not sure what else it could actually be.

I laughed more than I probably should have...

I'll make sure to keep chipping away at it, there's a lot of scope and room to add new things that's for sure. The little subtle animations are the best kind, leaves you always looking for more. Makes the whole experience a lot more fun and interesting.

I'll keep progress posted for sure. :)

The more I look at the ship actually the less happy I am with it. A lot of it doesn't make visual sense on some areas. Almost looks like part of it's rolling a little, which isn't quite the effect I was after.

Some traditional pencil sketches are in order I'd say.
