Pixel Art / Re: [WIP][C+C] Waiting for Godot Scene
« on: July 30, 2015, 03:50:55 am »
I haven't done as much as I want to this piece, but it's been way past the deadline of when I wanted to post an update, so I'm just showing what I have.

I plan to make the road have a more interesting shape and to refine the shading on the tree more. I did some work on the people that may or may not be noticeable.

I'm now still not sure about the detailing on the ground, and also not sure about whether everything at the right size. Should the tree be bigger? The mountain smaller? The road bigger up close?

Thanks again for all the input. I think it's much better now than before.

Thanks for the great feedback guys. I hope to have time to work on this over the weekend. I agree the perspective is an issue and I need to work on my light source.

I'll try to embrace the side scrolling brawler look while adding depth to the scene. Will post when I have an update!  :)

An update:

I added a highlight on the ground and refined a couple things very slightly.

What I need help with mostly in my opinion is the ground. I'm not sure how to keep it simple and not take away from the foreground while still making it interesting. Also, I was wondering if that path reads as a dirt road or a river? It's supposed to be a dirt road.

Pixel Art / [WIP][C+C] Waiting for Godot Scene
« on: June 29, 2015, 02:07:46 am »
I'm a programmer trying to make a really simple, somewhat interactive art piece (not really a game). It's based on the play 'Waiting for Godot' (film version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuU3RrGj3Lc). It is supposed to be dark and dreary and only have a road, a rock, a tree, and a pair of shoes.

I took the palette from http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17176 because I liked it so much.

Not much to comment on so far... keep it up? What you've done so far looks pretty good.

Really well done. The only thing that stands out to me is that the light from the windows should mix with the texture from the floor where it reflects. It being a solid color makes it stand out too much and look like it's almost floating on the surface.

I don't have much to say, but I like your new character more than the previous. The previous looks very rigid to me, probably because of his front arm being outstretched awkwardly. Also be careful with your light source. Be sure to keep it consistent. And it looks to me like the light source is up and left a bit, which if your characters are ever to face the other way, would cause you to have to draw a second set of everything to keep your light source correct.

I love those shadows Facet. It does the job of outlining without outlining. I worry though that as the scene gets more complex, and the background gains elements and depth (read: multi-layer background) then background elements would need to cast shadows like that too to be consistent and the whole thing falls apart.

And thank you for your compliment. I think I'm alright at determining what is "good" because I've been around art/artists a lot, but making something good is a whole different story. It's all trial and error right now -- meaning it takes me forever.

I'll be sure to post what I come up with next on this forum, because you guys are awesome and incredibly helpful.

Well that definitely makes the foreground stand out more, but I was trying to avoid desaturating the background so much because it makes me think the house is far away and desaturated due to fog, which it is not supposed to be. I do believe in this current drawing there is not a better way of making the background not intrude so much though.

I think I'm going to take a break from this specific piece and come at my game concept with a fresh start. This drawing, although 1000x better thanks to everyone who has commented, isn't quite what I had planned.

I have learned a whole crap ton doing these revisions and will definitely be applying this knowledge to the next version. #1 goal: contrast!

Massive revisions... I liked my old wood texture, but I wanted to keep my old trees' style, so I redid the fence (and the trees to try to add top-down lighting).
The new blue bird was too distracting, so I removed it for now.
I tried adding more contrast elsewhere, especially on the owl, to make the foreground stand out.

I'm a little nervous that the owl still doesn't stand out enough from the background...
