Pixel Art / Re: Animating motionblur/trails
« on: September 01, 2013, 07:44:55 am »
I think an important part of using motion blurs, is also an extra frame or two with whatever that is about to be blurred to stay in relative place. This indicates that some potential power/weight is being put into it and also gives the player/viewer a quick shot of what is going to happen before the swing happens.

If you look at all the gifs PixelPiledriver posted, before each motion-blur occurs is a either static frame or two, or one with very minuscule pixel movements. And then the follow through is a static image of where-ever the blur moved said object to.

Cyangmou - that is quite impressive, but I can't help but be reminded of this image:

Altourus: Your second attempt with the shading rough in place looks like a decent start - I like what you have for the tree trunk design, it looks pretty organic and its interesting to look at. And as Cyangmou showed - make some visually interesting clumps of leaves together and fill out the top a bit and you should have a pretty decent tree started :)

I forgot to mention - personally I like to use Graphics Gale (free), and then the editor within Multimedia Fusion 2 (not free). Photoshop is fine to use as long as you well... avoid pretty much all of the tools besides pen, line and fill. Having the layers and stuff is nice, but Graphics Gale is good for that also.

Stylewise I think these look okay but it doesn't look like there was any 'pixel-level' work done on them. They just look like characters you drew in photoshop with no actual pixel based editing. They would fall into Oekaki at this point I think.

Based on the comments above, I'm now bummed that the links are all broken! XD Can you re-upload so we can check them out?

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Cave Background

I really like this. (I'll be honest here, I actually just saved it to my reference folder, heh)

It's hard to tell without seeing the foreground layer where the player will be on but I might go as far as saying the closest background layer is almost TOO detailed. It might just be me though. Is the closest layer the one the player will be on or is it the first tier of background? If no, do you have an example with the game level tiles in place?

Thanks for the C&C guys, I shortened the legs by about 25-30 pixels and it indeed looks much better.  I'll try to upload a new screen capture soon, not at my usual workstation. :D

Greetings everyone, Chaos here from puddinghatgames.com - It was suggested to me to come to you folks for some critiques on the anatomy of one of the bosses I am working on, from a fellow member here. The final version of this boss will have everything covered, as you can see in the sketch I have provided along with my rough draft for the base.

So far the feedback I have received is mostly that her legs are just a bit too big for her torso, which I can agree with. Before I continue on with the rest of the detailing, I would like to get the proportions as close as possible.

I would be quite grateful for any C&C anyone is willing to assist with, and after browsing around I hope to become an active member of the community here now that I've found it. :D

Thanks!

Edit:
I made some edits on some friends suggestions and started adding some of the other pieces.

Here is a side by side of the rough base sprite art (on the right) and the current state.
