Pixel Art / Re: Library title screen design
« on: January 07, 2017, 02:41:14 am »
I redesigned it in a hexagonal form, but I didn't realize until it was done that I hadn't followed the horizon advice. I'll try to fix it up along with adding some grass later.

I also figured that the light section of the hill should resume on the parts outside the house, so I made the shadow only behind the house.

For some reason I feel like the lighting and overall design is less convincing in this version. I'm also having trouble finding a good way to display the letters. I prefer the way the roof looks this way, though.

Pixel Art / Library title screen design

Hey everyone,

I recently did the art for a Ludum Dare game, so now I'm going back to polish it up because the titlescreen is just blank text at the moment. Maybe I'll post the rest of the art later, but for now I'm trying to really polish up the menu screen.

This is the current version of the menu screen:

Most recently I worked on adding shingles to the roof, though it got a bit messy. Here is the outline I did for the shingles just for reference:

If you have any advice or suggestions, I would appreciate it. I had a lot of fun with the lighting and colors with this. I also had some more elaborate plans for the windows but I had to really simplify them to get it legible.

Pixel Art / Re: Downstage Draft - jam game art

Something does seem off about the walking animation, though to me it doesn't really seem like he's walking backwards. His legs don't seem like they really have enough grip or push I guess. It doesn't really have any character or bounce to it either, though it's probably best to keep it at a fairly normal walk anyway given the tone of the game. I was trying to do the walking animation from a somewhat diagonal perspective, as it seems most games never do their side-facing animations from an exactly straight angle, but I might have gotten the perspective mixed up a bit.

Another thing that might be affecting the way I see it is that the way the animation is coded in the game, the body seems to be pushed backwards instead of the legs extending forward. I don't know, it's kind of hard to figure out exactly what's wrong with it.

Pixel Art / Downstage Draft - jam game art
« on: June 20, 2016, 02:52:23 am »

I recently did the art for a jam game where you switch fans to control your movement and platforming. The game was made over the course of a week, so the animation system/artwork may not be as polished as it could be. We were thinking of cleaning it up for a post-jam version, but regardless of if we do or not, it'd be nice to have some critique so I could improve how it looks.  :)

You can play the game here if you want to see it. The cutscenes weren't drawn by me, by the way.

Character animations:
Walking animation

Idle animation

Jump animation (as intended, it was coded differently into the game)

Enemy movement animation

I don't quite understand what you mean. Can you elaborate?

He was posting your image in normal scale. If you mean the "Head rotation in walk cycles is a sin" comment, that's just his signature. It's just a brief message people choose to put after all their posts. He didn't say anything to you aside from posting the image.

Okay, thanks a lot for the advice, it looks quite a bit better now.

I tried to make the arm animation smoother and tried to make it go in more of an arc so that the hand is lowest when it's pointing straight down. I thought his hair looked stiff so I animated the little bit of hair at the front. I adjusted the legs to fit with the bobbing motion.

I'm probably going to do running animations and walking backward animation next, though if there's still stuff you see wrong with this one I would be happy to work on it.  :y:

You need to choose your colors more carefully on your character. The grey blends in with the light green slightly so it is hard to make out the outline of the grey piece. The dark green cape blends with the dark grey legs so much that you can't see the design of the feet at all without looking very closely into it. The light grey on the gun is too similar to the grey of the (armor? I can't really tell what that light grey part is). Make sure that it's easy to tell what each part is from the distance they are going to be playing the game at, especially when you're making the character they're going to be playing for the whole game.

Hope your game turns out well. :)

Pixel Art / Character design and some animations [C+C] [WIP]
« on: December 09, 2014, 09:52:11 pm »
I've been working on some art + animations recently for a game a friend is trying to make. I don't have too many details about what it's going to be like, but she has said all the stuff I've done so far is fine, so I figure I'll just keep working on this until I learn more details.

Side walk cycle:

Front facing image, Front walk cycle

Possible diagonal front pose if I need to animate a diagonal:

I would appreciate some help on stuff I'm getting wrong. I made this in Paint and animated it in GIMP. I'll try to keep updating and improving this as I need to draw new things and have things to improve on existing art. :)

EDIT: Hosting the animations somewhere else as they stopped animating a minute after I made the post and could not be fixed by reloading the page or using a different browser.   :-\

I've got a title for it now...

Though "Shot" is a pretty lame name.
I tried a bit more fancy stuff with the shading this time, not just sticking to a couple of colors. The guy shooting I've messed around with to work a bit better, but the fundamental movements are still the same (which I think were flawed to begin with, so I'm going to need to find a way to do it better). Anyway, I might make a background too, but seeing as I'm not making this for a game, it kind of leaves me without a purpose making all this stuff. It's fun, anyway, and I might learn some more stuff about pixel art while making it.

I learned from reading various guides that I'm pillowing when making pixel art, but only after I made an animation of the main character.

I've compiled a list of stuff I need to fix, but more stuff to add to the list is appreciated.  ;D

*  Head and visor perspective is odd while turning
*  Gun moves row of pixels above it when firing
*  Foot on right side sinks into the ground
*  Leg animation needs work, but I can't put a finger on how to fix it.

I might do a running animation after this, and I'll try to work on keeping the light source consistent.
