Pixel Art / [WIP] Jenny In Space!
« on: March 30, 2013, 02:08:46 pm »
Hey all.
I'm starting on a platformer/shoot-em-up with a sci-fi/space theme. Here I've got the main character, a daring and independent girl named Jenny.

Any advice, critique, comments, criticism, and other such feedback are welcome and would be GREATLY appreciated.

edit: oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the character will pretty much always be on a black background.

Alright, redid the colours on this beauty. I pretty much copied the shading patterns on the metal from ptoing's edit, if that's alright. I redid the clasp to be more golden than dusty brass, and the wood to be mahogany-ish than oak or something. I bent the metal rim toward yellow/orange as opposed to flat grey.

I think I might be done with this, but thoughts are always welcome if you think it could be markedly improved.
Thank you very much for your advice. I will be taking a look at the other graphics I've done for this project accordingly.

EDIT: Added a black bg, because of the forum skin.

Alright, I just basically took out the line on the bottom. The upper-right isn't bothering me nearly as much now, so I guess problem solved :/

Still, any more CC would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I'm working on this 16x16 chest for a roguelike, and I'm not happy with the upper-right corner.
I would really appreciate some help on this.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Werther Wellington (CC Requested)

Hi, my brother and I are starting a new game project, and we're doing pixel work. This is the main character, he's a sort of burnout gentleman with an opium problem. The cane isn't for walking, so much as he's just sort of rich and has it.

Anyhow, here's what we've got so far.

(Background provided due to forum style. Not sure if it really helps though, as it washes the character out a bit.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Game is a 2d platformer. Really simple game, not much to really say about it mechanics wise.

EDIT: Here it is on red. Works a tad bit better I think.

I can see a couple things off, but I'm browsing with a mobile device, so I'll just try my best to touch on what I personally saw first and foremost.

First off, the perspective on the head and on the rest of the body seem very different, with the head being viewed flat, and the rest as though the bear were facing sort of right-downish.
Second, the contrast of apparent texture between the head and the rest of the body is jarring, and it feels like the bottom half could be more defined, as it's fairly ambiguous shapewise.
As for the fur, I'm afraid I cant be of a great deal of help, as I am not too hot on fur/hair myself. Sorry!

Hey, I hate to be posting without any content again, but my computer took a dive, and I had to start from scratch, so I lost a fair bit of work.
I'm posting to let you know that I'm still working on this (I didn't abandon it) but it may be a couple days before I can get straight back to it.

Thank you for your patience.

Okay, I'm finished with this sprite for now. I'm going to start working on animating it (not my strong point, so more CC would be appreciated there too)

If there's anything glaringly wrong with this sprite, I'd appreciate a heads up, but other than that, I think I'm done.

what type of game are you going for? ^ ^ one suggestion for your first screen mockup if they aren't already planned would be to construct an igloo if outdoors, or some icicles and icy cavern themed tiles if indoors
I'm going for a puzzlish platformer with a simple, but charming story. Most of the game will be outdoors, but there will be a couple of cave/den stages. I've got a few ideas for mockups, but the igloo thing is fun, so it totally makes the list :)

In terms of colour, I'm thinking lots of blue, white, grey. The character will probably stand either on top of the ground, or a pixel in. (probably the latter, but I'll make that decision when it needs to be made.)

Nice explorations definitely looking more Eskimo than before, and more little boy than cute little armless alien.
Danke. I was going for something sort of effeminate, hence the "girly" pose in the first few. I see what you did to cut down on outline, and I'll work on that. And I totally agree about the fifth colour making it pop nicely. I was a tad scared to stray from the 4 colour palette (I'm still inexperienced, obviously.) but I'll try to be smart about it.

the buttons on the left don't really read as buttons, they just kinda vaguely give the impression of tartan.
Now, I know I'm very likely wrong here, but I'm not seeing tartan in those buttons. Again, probably just me. (unless you were just referring to the sprite on the very left, in which case, I totally see how that coul read as tartan.)

Thank you for the input! I'll be sure to keep the new stuff in mind while working on the sprite.
