We're looking for an artist to create the world map tiles for our upcoming genre-defining fantasy strategy/RPG, "War Arcana".

The game is a competitive, turn-based, multiplayer RPG played on randomly generated worlds with 100-200 players in each. It is played in its entirety on the world map, where players explore, trade and make war in order to become the undisputed ruler.

In order to evoke the experience of a lush and magic world, we're looking for an experienced artist who can hit the very specific atmosphere and feel we'd like to achieve.

We hope for colours and feel similar to these non-tiled examples: http://imgur.com/a/CT3kJ

However, tiles are expected to be classic topdown map tiles in the style of old school RPGs: http://imgur.com/a/E6npN

We expect price offers in the range of $40-$70/h, but everything is of interest.

The tile set consists of:
- 11 Terrain tiles with transitions.
- 18 Buildings

Each tile is at least 64x64px.

To apply, send an e-mail to info@aegik.com stating your interest in the position as map tile artist with a link to your portfolio or example tiles. Applications without demonstrated map tile artwork will not be considered.

General Discussion / Tile map perspectives?

I'm currently developing an RPG-ish strategy title where you walk around the map in the way of old school RPGs like Ultima IV. I want to spice up the map with a more interesting perspective though.

I like the isometric perspective, but I need a good match between pressing north and moving upwards on the screen. (Moving through the diagonals in the isometric screen is not an option)

Ideally I'd like to end up with a map in this style, but composed out of tiles:

Anyone who has experimented with tile maps with variants to the isometric perspective who can give me suggestions?

There is the idea to simply use rectangular tiles, but the naive design would be equivalent to repeating the same tile horizontally twice everywhere. That couldn't possibly be enough. In this case buildings, mountains etc would obviously need to be overlapping, so that a building extends partly above the tile above, but the flat part of the terrain needs to invoke some perspective in itself, and I wonder if it can.
