Pixel Art / Re: Optical Illusion

Well, Escher Triangle usually is represented with 3 colors, one for each "plane", and yours has only 2. I think maybe you could start with that.

Also If you want to try dithering you can shape shadows like that; this will be more difficult so more interesting (?).

About your pixelart technique, I have some things to say. Look your outlines and birkka's, and compare: yours in some parts are double, that is what some pixelartists call "banding" and you should try to skip it. Do antialias, not banding. It's not the same (sometimes banding is inevitable but you can hide it a little, breaking that big pixels)

Also, the use of 2 different colors for outline made you do some selout. I will no tell you a lot about selout because someone could shoot me; some pixelartists are in favor of using selout and others extremely not (it's like a taboo word but you deserve to know what it is). I think it's because they tell about different thinks and call it always "selout".

The people who is pro-selout talk about breaking the outline a little to fit better with an specific background that will have always more or less the same darkness (so "selout" in that case makes the sprite and the background fit better)

Look the outlines of that girl, it's "good selout", on white maybe looks strange but the background of the game is dark-brown to not-so-dark-brown and it always looks good xD

The people who is against selout talk about giving the outline some lightness effects so in light parts the outline is bright and in dark parts no (and they call it "selout" or simply "shit"). That's not the same, that "bad selout" makes the sprite not fit well with any background because when some part looks well the other parts look weird and conversely. They say also a big truth; when you make that selout you break the shadow forms (especially with dark background colors)

What I can say to you is: Make "good selout" if you want but try never to do "bad selout". If you aren't sure what type of selout you made, just don't use it xD
And also: Don't talk so much about selout. I am putting myself in danger now.

I think it could be a good idea make the clouds darker than the sky. It makes more sense to me. Also I want to suggest adding an halo on the moon.

Well I'm not great at art, but this makes me better 'night' feelings.

Pixel Art / Re: i need some help with tree making.
« on: July 29, 2013, 07:26:09 am »
Well, hah...
Anything I could say would not fit on what you are looking for, there are so many ways to make trees and all them are valid, so consider that. If you need references you can search on pixeljoint or on this forum, there are thousands, millions maybe. Billions not.

You can make the foliage leaf by leaf or all in one, and there also are so much ways to pixelate that foliage. I like the leaf-by-leaf option when it's suposed to be a big leaves tree, where you can pixel all one by one without spending too much time.

In opposite way you can efficiently pixel all the folliage playing with shadows.

The 'sane' combination of both techniques usually is the best option.

Back on your tries, they are too plane: they need more detail and shadows. Looking the type of tree you did, I would recomend something like that:

Beware also your pallete, this last example was 22 colors and it's enough. Your trees need to be indexed on a better pallete, they have too many colors. Edit: Ah well sorry it's because it is in jpg, I didn't see that. Use always png or gif.

Oh I forgot about that. This is my favourite pixelart, and it has a big tree:

Look how the shadows are.

I agree with Anarkhya. Maybe something like that would be a better choice:

I edited only the short cliff, I'm that lazy :P

Some textures are a bit off, you should try to improve it, especially grass and dirt, because it looks a bit noisy.
Did you use that as a reference? Kiwinuptuo RPG Tileset: Green Forest.
It looks like.

Is the wall inspired on the Warcraft II tiles?

If not, maybe you can take it as a reference for yours.

I think I need the meme "I have no idea what I'm doing" right now.

Mhm... maybe with black background, my try gets a bit better... mhm... *checking*
Nop, still a shit, sorry. ::)

I edited a bit the leafs, because I think they need another perspective.

I love that tileset anyway and I think you are doing a brilliant job on it.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Forest Tileset
« on: September 22, 2012, 11:58:36 pm »
I just started this forest tileset and need help to improve it.

My plan is use that as an RPG maker tileset.
Any suggestions to make it look better?
