2D & 3D / Re: Official Anatomy Thread
« on: April 18, 2010, 01:58:04 pm »
I didn't think that this would be worth making a topic about, so I'm just gonna ask this here.

How do you go about learning anatomy? What's the best way?

Do you start with learning the skeleton? The muscles?
Live study or photographic reference of nudes is where I would start.

I don't want to dissuade you from studying the underlying anatomy because it is definately worthy, but getting confident with more general concepts like form, proportion and foreshortening are most important for the beginner.

Just was awared of this insane music video for the song "Trucker's Delight" by Flairs, hopefully you can excuse (or enjoy) the slathering of nudity and visual innuendo.

Anybody know the artist(s) responsible?

I've finally decided to address a problem I've had forever (and I doubt I'm the only one). I almost always have perspective problems with portraits at tricky angles, some critique on an example would be lovely; any sufferer of this particular problem can agree that it doesn't seem be resolved after the first (million) correction(s).

This frustrates me so much!

Pixel Art / Re: .Connexion Bus [WIP] [ Isometric ]

May I ask why a Connexxion bus? Dutch pride is one thing, but the design is so uninspired.

I think you should reconsider the bus' actual shape before your continue further. Some of the proportion has been related differently in your pixel; most importantly the amount of bus behind the rear wheels and the width of the doors. The front of the bus also tapers back down towards the ground, the front bumper is not the furthest forward point.

Take a good look over the bus reference, you've missed a few things. Good luck with this piece, nice work so far.

Pixel Art / Portrait WIP

Hi everybody. :)

It's been a long while since I've officially created a piece of pixel art. It's mostly been good old pencils and charcoals for the last six months.

As it were, I was longing to get back in with a piece that would take my attention and patience to complete nicely; something to get me back into the swing of things. Portraits are good for that. :P

It's just a random face, no-one in particular. I'd very much appreciate some c&c before I start getting deep into this (especially regarding anatomy) and I would love to break a few old habits.

Tear it apart.

I really love this piece, especially the newest pallete change. The way you progress with the portrait is very interesting, but certainly very effective.

I think you might be able to provoke some emotion from her by curling the lips upward in a very mild smile and add some stress to her eyes (wrinkles around the eyes, bring the inner eyebrows down; lines above the eyebrows, forehead etc.) to give her eyes more emotion than the passive stare she's current wearing.

I think the inclusion of a streetlamp directing light somewhere on the scene would be very beneficial to this piece, as well as the disclusion of alot of the wall detail. try to keep it simple and geometric I'd say.

Your small objects don't read too well. Get a recognisable shape before your begin adding highlights and whatnot.

Great compliment coming from you. :P

That right hand side with the water is tops. :D I think the left platform could definately benefit with some similar details.

You might want to look at how Fool uses the midtone and shadows to give the foliage depth. Really good technique.
