General Discussion / Re: Looking for isometric game engine

Honestly, you would be best off finding a programmer to work with even the most user friendly and easy to use engines in existence are inevitably going to be missing certain features you want in your game.  Since for the most part engines are starting places not finished be all products in of themselves.  Otherwise you would be forced to constrain yourself to the features set available to the engine and
nothing else.

I do admit shamelessly that I am prowling for an artist to work on a project of my own.  I am messing around with the Torque engine and have it setup with an isometric and semi orthographic view point.  Innately though the world is still 3D.

Here is a quick screen shot of a test map with some ripped stand in sprites from disgaea i was using to test out my code for the animation.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Now of course I am wanting to work on a commercial game and this pseudo 3D stuff may or may not be your thing, and we might end up having wildly different ideas on graphical style (not that I am showing in that screen) but you never know these things until you have a look at least.  Oh and in case anyone was curious I am using the much older Torque game engine for that screen shot.  I am currently working on a similar setup for T3D

General Discussion / Re: Advice on Hiring Artists

yeah actually that is quite helpful.  Answers about all questions and concerns I might have other than how to best make a first impression.

As to the budget I am looking at spending 400 a month over a long period of course that is no where close to full time or even part time at those rates.  Since it is per month over long term guess it would leave it up to the artist for how to use his time.

Anway thanks for the response I need to draft up an email.

General Discussion / Advice on Hiring Artists
« on: September 23, 2011, 05:57:47 am »
Greetings, I am new to the forums here and I am considering hiring an artist.  I am looking for advice on how best to approach things from the artists standpoint.  I have had it strongly recommended to me that I should push for payment in terms of per item produced.  On the other hand I have seen posts that encourage artists to push for payment per hour spent on the work.  I can see that both sides simply are looking to protect there own interests and not get cheated.  There must be some middle ground that can be reached on this.

What is the industry standard pricing for contract art.

Since I think it would be hard to give any ballpark estimate for price/time ranges without any context.

I am looking for Isometric charecter sheets
8 direction movement.  The sheet would be mirrored and of similar scale and detail to disgaea.
2 diagonal direction attack animations for several weapon types
plus various poseses for special attack sequences

What other details would effect the cost and time?
