Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Some quick tiling work
« on: June 29, 2013, 05:59:09 am »
Pretty good start :)

I like where it's going.

I agree with Pype, in that the lines around the brown rocks are too dark/contrasting.

Also I think that the rocks look too flat, and need some detail in themselves, so they don't look too cartoony.

Should look pretty cool when you're done though, I'd like to see your next version! :D

I'd just like to vouch for Zen's work - she's great, definitely recommended!

Hehe, yeah, it was really hard to find something like that with Google :P

I'm hoping I get something cool for my game!

Hey again everyone

First off, I'd just like to say thanks for all the responses I've had (mainly through email) - however, I'm still looking for a few things (mainly the character art, I believe).
But feel free to keep applying for anything, I'm always interested in seeing your work! Even if I don't hire you for this particular game, there'll be plenty more after it :)

Just thought I'd post some ideas on what kind of thing I mean when I say that the player character will be in power suit / power armor.

Basically it's a person in a robotic-powered suit. The character model doesn't even need a face :) Could just have a helmet on.

Here's Iron Man, a pixel art marine I found somewhere, and a Starcraft Space marine, just to give you an idea of what I mean.

(of course the actual art I need will be side-view, or partial side-view, like that red marine in the middle)

-EDIT-

Oh I forget to say, the character has to fit within 2x3 tiles, so that's 32x48 pixels at most (but you don't have to fit him completely, there can be some space left over)

General Discussion / Re: Read the Rules, then introduce yourself here.

Hi everyone :)

I'm a game developer from Australia, and I love pixel art. But unfortunately, I'm not a good artist lol

So you'll probably see me around the forum giving C+C and asking to hire artists :)

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Random objects and guy walking, C+C

That's cool RedKnight!

The objects are very nice - good box, and I really like the tree.

I also like how his nose waggles up and down as he walks - it adds to the "character" of the character :P

Ok, so I thought I'd post a sketch of a little robot that I just drew.

A few people said they'd like to do a demonstration for me, so this is an example of the type of thing I need art for.

But... no laughing!! I'm not an artist remember :)

It's a little hovering robot that shoots a laser out of it's eye :D

Feel free to modify the design as much as you want! Rough size is about 32 pixels wide.

(bonus points if you make an animation for it closing and opening ^^)

As for style - not too cartoony.

Enjoy!

Sure, I can provide a bit of extra information!

I'm currently creating the engine - it's a tile engine that can generate and run maps up to 268 million x 268 million blocks in size (each block is 16x16 pixels).
(Terraria's largest map is 8400 x 2400 tiles, compared)

The game can be played as both singleplayer or multiplayer (so people can join together to explore and create together).

I'm still designing and adding details and ideas, but I have a rough idea of what it will look like. I just thought it'd be nice to get an artist on board right from the start.

So, as to the setting of the game, it's an alien planet, similar to earth, but a bit different, too.
The planet has some alien technology on it.

Environments will range from the usual dirt and grass, to stone, water, lava, mountains, caves, etc. (with some alien environments too)

As to the amount of graphics I'd need...

- terrain tilesets, probably about 6 distinct ones, with the rest being modifications of the others.
- trees, crystals, and other objects
- player graphic - a person in a power suit / mech suit / power armor - animated for running left/right, jumping, and looking towards where the mouse is pointing. Male and female versions would be required, but can be very similar.
- creatures (animated for moving and attacking)
- robots (animated for moving and attacking)
- technology items (player's base items, like turrets, generators, elevators, etc.)

There is no colour limit - I'll be using 32-bit pngs, with 8-bit alpha transparency.

There are also some ideas and details that I'd like to leave hidden at this stage :P

But I hope that helps!

-EDIT-

Removed some information about the game, as I don't want to reveal too much :)

Hey all

I'm making a game, along the lines of Minecraft, but 2d (similar to Terraria I guess). Side-view (mario style).

Given I'm much more of a programmer than an artist, I'd like to have someone else do the art for the project.

I'm happy to pay for the work (by negotiation over email).

So I'll be needing things like:

- terrain tiles (16x16)
- sci-fi objects
- robots
- turrets
- creatures
- people in powerd armor / small mech suits

... and that sort of thing. If you can't do all of it, but can do some, that's fine - I'm happy to work with multiple artists.

You can contact me (preferably) by email, and also on the forum here. It'd also be great to see some of your work, if you have a portfolio, or even just some previous work to show me, I'm easy :)

Thanks!

Oh cool - are you doing the programming as well as the graphics for this game?
