General Discussion / 8-bit Lexicon
« on: August 26, 2013, 05:10:02 am »
Hello, I'm not a pixel artist, but I've always loved the idea of low-spec pixel art.  I am interested in the conveyance of ideas in the form of symbols, especially with a very minimum of information.  I just so happen to be in a place where I need to tackle a programming project, something interesting and interactive using these ideas.

I'm envisioning creating a crowd sourced lexicon of game tiles.  At first I figured I would start by allowing people to draw and generate noise using a single color from a 16 color palette on an 8x8 grid.  Then that would enter a database and there would be some sort of gameified incentive for people to label those tiles with an idea of what it is they are looking at.

My idea for the end result would be a database containing a dictionary with lexical (idea) relationships between tiles, all based on a lexical dictionary that exists already free to use.  Then I would love to slowly up the resolution and colors and be able to build off of those low spec tiles and just see what develops.

I'm posting because I can have some quite off-the-wall ideas, and I was curious if there would actually be any interest in using such a thing, or accessing a database like that.  Or if anybody had any other angles on it that I might want to consider.

Not to divert the conversation, but it was supposed to be a Komuso monk.. they wear baskets on their heads.  Does he look too short, or does the basket make him appear 'adolescent'?

Pixel Art / It's been a long time...

It's been a long time since I've been here, mostly I've been a lurker.  I was in the mood yesterday and pixelled this.  Right now I only have access to upload a prescaled version.

First of all, can you tell what it's supposed to be?  Second, any suggestions on improving it as far as rough draft type of things, not necessarily AA or dithering, yet.

Polyamoury is the way to go... all of that would have been avoided had our global community been conditioned into a more (what I believe to be) refined way of behaviour... character... integrity... that's just a way of pinning down people to behave in a certain manner for the so called good of humanity - bound by rules the church intially set up to control our wanton ways which has become deriguer of the global societies belief system whether you're religious or not... let's face it - people sleep around... partners 'cheat' on each all the time - I'd rather people were open and honest with each other and appreciate the beauty in each other... male or female and don't get too hung up on taboo or possesive over each other!

Heh, I used to wish that's the way things should be.  Unfortunately, in my life experience, jealousy is ingrained.. and once the green eyed monster gets involved, all this openness idea gets thrown out the window.  Plus there's other fun stuff, like STD's.  I'm not saying that I'm pro-establishment, but life is an balancing act between rules and instinct.

And one thing for sure, if I pixled as much as I've been talking, I might actually improve some.

I think the most important part of getting into martial arts, more important than the specific art is to find a good teacher.  You're really luck y if you can find someone with: good technique, the ability to teach, and no serious ego problems.

My instructor was pretty good, although he seem to give the girls a little more attention than the boys.  I heard some interesting stories about him after I ended up leaving class.  I don't think this is the most terrible thing, as long as doesn't interfere too much in class.

Although I had a friend who trained in TKD with someone who had great technique, and knew how to teach.  The high belt was his wife.  Unfortunately the whole class broke up when he ended up sleeping with another woman in his class.  Heh, how's that for character and integrity.

I like the face.  It looks almost aboriginal, and its paleness contrasts well with the hair.  The only complaint I have is that there is nothing that indicates she is a 'she' with the stance and the clothes.  Although depending on what you were going for, it may not be a relevant complaint.

Well, I'm not exactly sure what sort of cloth that is supposed to be, if you could be more detailed on what kind of fine cloth (wool, silk, etc..) maybe people could give more specific input.

Sometimes an indicator of fineness would be a bit of translucency, or perhaps sheen.  Also fineness could mean perhaps a thinner cloth, it looks just a bit bulky as it curves over the headband.  But it all depends on what you were going for.

- Start training some new martial art (teakwondo perhaps?), I've come and gone to my kickboxing/thaiboxing club too many times. It's starting to feel a bit embarassing.

Heh, that reminds me of my unfaithful relationship with Hapkido.  As much as I've come and gone, I don't think I can show my face there anymore.  BTW, it's a great art if you can find a good teacher.

I haven't been around this forum for very long so I haven't been able to see a lot of that art.  I have to say, Helm's spartan is stunning,  the colors are amazing.  Gets me pumped to see that movie adaption of 300.
