Gosh, so many great pieces this year! Let's hope all of us WIP-ers can finish ours too. Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays / etc, everyone!

yaomon17: I love the character you made for me :D Great colors, I like the chaotic scarf and his demonic fire eyes. And the little blue flame! Heehee. Hope you had fun with it! :)

Dex: Thanks! I'm *really* sorry I had to submit that in such an extremely unfinished and roughly sketched state, it's a bit embarrassing :( I've been swamped with contract work, but I really hope that you'll like the final version! This at least shows the kind of elements it will have, hehe ;D

Pixel Art / [WIP] Bunny Witch Girl
« on: November 27, 2013, 01:13:20 am »
Hey, I started drawing a bunny witch girl.

mockup rough:

sprite by itself:

The bunny ears are artificial decorations attached to her hat. Her skin is supposed to be shaded like skin, not fur.

thoughts I had:
- Trying to show a tattoo on her right arm / our left seems to be difficult while also trying to keep things anatomically correct. (dress is supposed to be asymmetrical so her tattoo is more exposed)
- I'm having difficulty making her boots stand out from her stockings. I think they need to have a wider 'opening'?
- The anatomy / posing needs fix ups but I'm not entirely sure
- Her stockings need fixing
- Trying to show that she has wide hips, but I think I need to exaggerate it more. Ugh this is tricky with the dress there
- The hat is hard to read behind those ears
- Various messy shading
- Leg posing could be less boring

I appreciate any C + C / edits.

Hey, it's been a few years since I've been on Pixelation, but I figure this is kinda fun. Count me in! My expectations are pretty relaxed, after all, this is an activity for fun, and I assume people have other things going on. As long as you have fun, and feel like you're challenging yourself somehow, I think that's pretty cool. Even if not, I guess. I also hope that nobody is too critical of whatever I make for them, but I'll do my best.

Here are some ideas!

Likes: people with nifty outfits that have lots of accessories, colorful pastel palettes, watercolor paintings, asymmetry, dynamic poses, explosions, cute things, cats, frogs, ducks, Kirby, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, squids, bees, bats, trains, boats, weird monsters, hearts, stars, grassy terrain, vibrant teal/purple/orange/pink/yellowy-green hues

Zccc: Hahah, this is so cool! The banana war scene is silly and awesome. I am very uncertain how a banana will fight against tanks and bomber planes, but it makes me laugh. The other one looks like a powerup from a game, pretty cute animation, and the face is hilarious. Good work!

Also, wow, there are a lot of great pieces this year! I have to give props to The B.O.B., Jad, Mush, Doppleganger, Vierbit, Indigo, Dex, Akira, Reo, darchangel, Joe, alkaline, and oh man there are too many I feel bad for leaving people out here, so many cool pieces :D. Overall, everyone has done awesome. :)

If I had more time I definitely would have fixed a few things and added some more detail, but I think what I managed there works.

Wow, that's a definite improvement. Though, I still have a few crits.

The tree looks very flat, and the way you've colored it, it looks like the leaves for the tree are BEHIND the branch layer. Rather than, having the branches blend into the tree. I think part of this is due to your contrasting color selection on the branches vs leaves. And another part is that the "sphere" of leaves you have doesn't really  seem to accurately look like there's branches under it. You might need both brighter and darker colors on the leaves to bring out volume.

Your other parts, like the grass and dirt are good. But you have this weird, mix saturated with unsaturated colors thing going on. Since the color ramps are jumpy between different saturations, instead of being smoother, you can notice banding and weird patterns popping out more than others in the rocks and such.

The grass needs some highlights, and I don't think it should have a shadow at the top. That shadow especially doesn't work, because it goes too dark and it has weird grey buffer shades.

Anyway, I think you can fix this up and create something truly stellar.

Pixel Art / Re: The Masked Man

Hello SWOT. I'll offer you some crits.

In some ways, I think the earlier version was better. The mask had more character, and you didn't have much dithering.

I made an edit.

To summarize:
* 40 colors is too many for a piece this small. I reduced it to 14 colors.
* Your arms were way too short, so the droopy coat sleeves thing really didn't work. Making the arms longer makes the effect believable.
* There were too many near black colors.
* You seem to not share color ramps between the different pieces of your sprite. This hurts the unity a bit.
* The mask needs to be more mask-like, by making the hair go behind the mask, and by making the edges of the mask more clear.

That said, the character is neat, it just needs more work! Hopefully you can make progress towards this. I'd say, start with better color selection and shading. Then worry about the other elements, like the anatomy.

Pixel Art / Re: Grass and dirt tiles -- comments?
« on: August 03, 2009, 05:25:06 am »
Hey Lendrick! Nice start on these tiles. Your dirt looks excellent.

But hmm, the grass seems too noisy. If anything, I'd have bigger strands. Get a few, well-defined blades, and draw over them. The less noise, the easier it is for it to be read, and the nicer it is for you to tile it. Your dirt doesn't look near as noisy, on the other hand, which is good.

Also, the transitions at the edge of the grass look like they need a lot more attention. Your bottom shadows on the grass transition are too small.

The strands at the "top" of your grass have blades which don't really make sense. There's only highlights at the top of the blade, and it makes it look like the grass doesn't actually poke out, because there's not enough elevation.

The colors for the grass pretty much work, I'd probably use another highlight color on that.

Also the plant on the grass seems really out of place. Now it's TOO saturated, whereas before it wasn't contrasting enough.  I would draw the plant as a separate image before trying to merge it entirely with the grass, but keep its surroundings' palette in mind.

So yeah, the grass as it is needs a lot of reworking, sadly. It might be easier to start over than to clean up all the noise. I don't know.

Keep at it though!
