Pixel Art / Re: [W.I.P] Swords.
« on: October 18, 2007, 04:49:39 pm »
Handles tend to be shorter than the uh, part that you cut with.
Unless we are talking about a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagamaki. However, I agree that this requires some work to get it looking decent. I would set the following targets for you:

-Make the tip of the sword a more interesting angle.
-Hilts of sword are traditionally made from metal. At the moment yours looks like wood, rather than wrappings or bindings. Make it more... wrapping-like.
-More shading to define the shapes of the blade.
-Gems are usually shiny and cut, so this should be reflected better in your pixelling.
-The elaborate shape of the hand-guard seems to be larcking in definition and shading. It also appears unlike metal. This issue is also found in the blade.

I would recommend looking at a reference, or doing a little research on how swords are made, decide which type of sword you wish to make, and then either edit or redo this piece to a higher degree of accuracy. Overall though, it's quite a good start to pixel art. Keep gunning onward!

General Discussion / Re: Official OT-Creativity Thread [Nudity]
« on: August 08, 2007, 08:12:30 am »
I'm not a huge graffiti fan, but quite a few of my friends are. My personal view on it is similar to Helm's: That it should be used for objection to political, enviromental, and cultural issues, rather than: 'OMG, a blank wall! Let's spray it with a three letter "tag" rather than actually put some time and effort into it!'
But yeah, I'm fine with motifs etc., just not the things that actually ruin the scenery. I was close to tears (well, sort of) when I found the same 'tag' all over the park. Trees, benches, nothing was spared. Then again, I take it that you live in the USA, so the grafitti culture over there might be a bit different to how it is over here.

Pixel Art / Old guy in love - colouring help?
« on: July 31, 2007, 10:26:03 am »

An old man with the two things he loves - his dog, and his TV.
I need help maintaining the style whilst colouring it.
KILL ME WITH CRITIQUE.
Oh, and it was heavily inspired by Souly.

Although I've been pixelling for around 2 years now, I seem to have barely improved, and even gone backwards in some areas. Needless to say, this is really getting me down. Also, although my analog art is steadily improving, the pixel art seems to get worse and worse, like I only have so much talent and must choose between areas. I spend about the same amount of time on both art forms, so it can't be lack of effort.
Any tips, any reasons for this, would be appreciated.
Also, I wish to improve, so I have considered several courses of action.

1: Quit pixel art, never to return (I'd rather not)
2: Restart my learning of pixel art, beginning once more from the basics. (This course of action seems good to me)
3: Keep slogging on, trying to improve.
4: Take a break from pixel art.
5: Get some mad inspiration.

Any more ideas or opinions would be very much appreciated.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Katana

Aye, it does... But it is more accurate. It may simply be because you haven't had much practise with curves in pixels yet. If so, just practise, practise, practise!  ;D

It does need to be curved more, yes.  Also, the handle should be longer, and remember that all of that but the Tsuba (finger guard) is one piece of metal.

Hmmm... Yes. "Learn the rules before you break them."

Maybe make the extreme background a better colour than yellow, as, last time I checked, the sky wasn't yellow  :P. But it's all up to you... I really like this.

It may not be a pixel-orientated critique, but to add to gameplay, variety, and difficulty give the player a load of incompatible weapons before a section of enemies that need a different type.
