Excellent, glad to see you're still working on it and improving!

Apologies about the size confusion.  I found a dodgy jpg somewhere.  It was blurry, as jpgs are, but it must also have been resized by about 10%. God knows why.

Anyway, I think it looks a lot better already, and I really prefer the outlined version.  Helps to make it more distinct and clean I feel.

I still feel that it could be pushed and improved further. To that end I've tried my hand at my first ever edit of someone elses work. Hope you dont mind.

Made a fair few minor changes to the overall shape and shading.  Have a close look and see how yours and mine differ, then take what you like and ditch what you dont.

The only thing I want to draw particular attention to is that I have 'grown' the wheels by a pixel vertically and horizontally.  I dont know if you were planning to animate, but at the smaller size I think it would have been tricky make them spin and still retain the detail you were aiming for.  And also if you look to your reference pictures, the front wheel extends as far forward as the gun does. Couldn't resist making a quick animation for you.

Apologies for the double post.  Not trying to bump, just that I edited my last post and it doesn't up the post count. So anyone who glances, waiting for an update, cant see that there's been one.  Lesson learned.

And I have done some more work anyway.  Just a quick start on a walking animation.  Needs some tidying up and reshading of the muscles, but I think it looks ok considering it's only the contacts and passing frames so far. Will be working on improving what's there and adding in betweens soon.

Think the chest may need to twist a little, but that'll be a git.

Oh, and he has some hair now.  Only rough, just got tired of seeing that bald head. ;D Plus I think it makes it more apparent that it's slightly top down.

Hi Ryuza

Not the most experienced artist myself, but no one else seems to have responded so I'll give it a shot.

Firstly, a quick question - why have you decided to do the image as small as you have? I never had a NES and had never heard of Blaster Master so I did a quick google.  From what I can tell the origional sprites were larger than the size you're working at.  Is that right?

I only mention it because at this size a few extra pixels might just allow you to define the shapes a bit more.

Anyway, a couple of things I noticed.

1) I wouldn't extend the highlight on the glass dome as much as you have, look at your bottom reference. And actually I prefer the blue glass in your original more than your edit.  Maybe try to find a colour in between?

2) You've rendered the bit that joins the canon to the chasis as just a thick black line. I think this totally masks what it should look like. A bit extra width on it and a little grey in the middle may do the trick.

Hope this helps for now.  Give it a go and I'll take another look for you.  Best of luck with and dont give up!!

Hi Demian,

Cheers for taking the time to ask your questions.

I never saw the pecs as feminine, though something doesn't seem quite right with them. Maybe they're too far down his chest? You're not the only person to think it, so I guess I can try a rework on the area and see how it goes.

I think you're right about his arms being too long in the angle view. I'll be chopping a few pixels come the morning!

As for your last point - yes it's supposed to be slighlty top down in both views.  Maybe it doesn't read that well in the front on view, but that's why you can see the top of his feet.

Hmm.. I'll be pondering this and putting in a load of work tomorrow.  Dont have a job, so plenty of time to kill!

Edit: Couple more hours work. Lots of minor changes, including fixes for what you highlighted.  Bizarre the things you can miss for looking too hard!

Tried to make it look more top down on the front view by altering his nose and lengthening his feet.  Think I made a better job of his pecs, they look less like man boobs now. I hope ;D

Anyway, anyone got more to point out. And also do you generally appreciate the animated gifs to help show the progression etc, or would static images be easier on the eye?

I'll be working on a downward walk until I hear more. My thanks for your time and effort as always.

Hello all,

been hanging around for a few weeks now, browsing, gaining some knowledge and being generally impressed. Thought it was about time to make my 1st post!

I intend for this chap to form the base of many sprites in a game project.  This is why he's naked at the moment! I probably wont need most of the detail as he will end up clothed, but it's a challenge to myself to get it as good as I can, and worth being careful in case I decide to have semi nude people wandering about.

Obviously I intend to animate him, but want to get him to a finished standard before embarking on that mammoth task.

Mainly looking for C+C regarding how well he reads, particularly: Can you tell it's the same guy and pose, but from different angles? Animated gif below may help.

I know there are many issues that will need fixing, i.e. some banding I probably cant see and his head seems a bit pillowy and there may even be some serious anatomy problems, but I've stared at this guy for so long now it's hard to see what needs doing by myself. The two poses represent 60+ hours of work for me so far.  Yeah I'm slow.  I'm new to pixelling and a bit of a perfectionist. :)

Anyway, looking forward to hearing some thoughts and putting some more work in.

Regards.
