To Camus's other comment, sadly I've done a lot of run loops, but usually of the 8 frame variety. I tried to keep torso movement to a minimum as this is traditionally how samurai and ninja run. Always with at least one foot on the ground for stability... that way if your shoved you don't just go flying. I think adding arbitrary constraints to a motion creates character in the motion.. however you have to use those constraints to force you to be creative and solve the motion in a different way.. which I don't think I've successfully achieved.

I want to capture the charm of the idle anim, so I may take this all the way back to motion design... ah well.. when you care about something :)

(the other constraint is trying to use the minimum number of frames required to convey the motion and character in an appealing way)

I've made some tweaks based on feedback, I agree with camus, the idle has a lot more 'tude then the run. I'm not sure exactly what to do about it with 6 frames though.  The idle is a nice 3 frame idle, and the animation is very subtle. With a run you are trying to represent this very volatile movement in 6 or 8 frames. Most animators say you can't really do it in less then 8 and have it be accurate.

just as a  point of reference, this is the spiritual successor of what I'm trying to capture...

So a while back, I posted this thread requesting critique of my idle animation, which I did finally update to take into account specular hilights.

[From thread] [New Edit]

I took what I learned from that and went on to do a run animation, here's some phases of creation, because their always fun to see...

[Final so far]

and my friend DayDream did an edit as well :)

There's a few things I think could be wrong with the run sprite, I'm curious to see if other people see them too, or if i've just been looking at it too long.

I really want to make this sprite / anim the best that I can, so don't be afraid to crit harshly.

Yeah, I noticed that when I was shading the top part of the legs. If the light area moved with the leg it looked wrong so I had to make it so it moved minimally while the legs moved.  It's a discipline that I need to teach myself when shading light, that will take some time... I'm not really an artist.. I just do it to relax and unwind every now and then. :)

I'm really happy with the progress on the sprite so far, I may give the light sourcing on the metal another shot...

Taking into account the subtle armor movement and a skin tone to welcome him to the land of the living...
