General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread 2016

letting feesamay out into the fresh air for the new year.

some of you might enjoy https://www.reddit.com/r/glitch_art/ , occasionally they find neat stuff. I loved:

playing pixel art animations on something like that old radio would be a cool display piece.

Hehe, that's actually my piece there, and I've been thinking about what to display on it. I know that Yoyo Games are working on an exporter for the Raspberry Pi, and I'd love to get a game up and running on it. I've played Mega Man on it, and it works, allthough a bit small. And you loose a lot of detail due to both the screen and the coaxial setup :)

So, trying to implement some of the excellent advice given by Decroded, and looking at the whole thing on a crt screen (yes, that's the target hardware) I tried to implement a more streamlined, less colored version. Unfortuenetly I won't get much time during the upcoming weeks to work on this, need to spend more time doing actual work. But it was still a really good excercise, and hopefully I can take time during a weekend to fix the last details, rework the face and give him some proper details. Thanks for the feedback, I'll return with the results :)

More great C&C, thanks! I really hope that I get a chance to go over the char a few more times, to really get the stuff you talk about into my spriting. Hopefully, if nothing else, it will be helpful during the next few sprites :) Thanks again, I'm really grateful, it's always nice when someone takes the time to teach!

So this is where I am today, trying to "learn, not copy". Hopefully, I'll get time to go over him once more, and use what I've learned from your edit and looking at other references, to improve.

Thank you Decroded, that's an excellent edit! I've tried just "blobbing" in the shapes, but my knowledge of anatomy is so low that it didn't really work. But I'll study what you did, and try to improve. Thanks again!

Attempted to block in some muscular structure to his legs, but lower body anatomy is still very new to me. Also looked at some superman illustrations, not because they are anatomically correct, but because I thought they might work well with illustrating that kind of muscle mass on this size.

I'm looking for some C&C on this brawler char. He's super early and very wip, so feel free to help me correct my horrible anatomy and all the banding. He's supposed to be a super hero / super stylized char, so not being perfectly anatomically correct is fine. But I'm curious, what do you think about the length of his legs? My original version was shorter, but  felt too thin. And besides, everybody knows, friends don't let friends skip leg day!

I might be missing something here, but isn't a hires-sprite two colors, one (transparent) background color, and one solid? I guess I'm just curious to see how you plan on doing the sprites in more than two colors?

Pixel Art / Char + Running animation
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:27:23 am »
Heya, long time no see, or rather no pixels. But hey, I'm here now, better late than never, right? I'm currently trying to get a basic understanding of animation, as a nice break from doing 3d-modelling and skeletal animation :) My current character is a pseudo-selfportrait, allthough slightly SD'd. As I'm not designing for anything specific, I went kinda overboard with the colors, probably need to reduce them somewhat. I'd love some general C&C on the character, I'm pretty sure there's a lot to be done.

The run animation started out at six frames (and that's what it's currently at) but after I was "finished" it I felt like I could probably extend the motion a bit and go up to eight. A couple of frames feel really jerky. What do you think? I haven't gotten started on the upper body/arms yet, wanted to see if I needed to do a total rehaul before I got any further.

[edit] Slight update, added two frames, and preliminary left arm movement. Will probably revamp entire animation, after tiles are done. Suggestions welcome.

I also have a little flash of him running, so you can see what I'm aiming to do with him.

As I see it, the pose is the most instantly recognisable feature about the characters, and since I've allready got an engine up and working with the original sprites, I'm not too keen on changing them at the moment. But I'm going to work on the sprites and see what turns up.
