Pixel Art / The Unicorn[wip]

first time i've done something like this, just playing with patterns and other nonsense. i'm quite happy with the sassy pose i gave him, and of course his plump strawberry nipples, the likes of which you could only read about in the most exquisite of romance novels. but any ideas you can think of to throw at him are welcome, maybe some anatomy stuff too, I'm not sure exactly where i'm going with the legs, or even what kind of animal to reference.

General Discussion / Re: What got you into Pixel Art?

It was probably back when i was in 5th-6th grade, around 11-12 years old. I was really big into emulation, and also fighting games(SNK Neo Geo games first and foremost), not just because I loved playing them, but their aesthetic and design was just so different, the sprites on screen weren't like platformers or any other kind, they were big and alive and demanded my attention above anything else. And due to the fact it was all on my computer, there was no blur or scanline to depreciate the image, which was a huge difference for me(I had always been a hardcore gamer glued to the tv, i probably didn't even know what a pixel was). But it wasn't the arcade game stuff that got me into pixelling, it was probably when i started emulating, and eventually bought a Neo-Geo Pocket Color so I could play King of Fighters R-2 and SNK vs. Capcom. If you're not familiar with them, most of the neo-geo pocket color fighting games carry the same trademark style that's become quite popular.

I think it was because the sprites were so simple, but so great to look at, especially in motion, it lit a spark for me that made me realize I could draw my own. The amount of character they had was absurd, and I was really inspired to try and capture that. That's about it I guess. I was a weird little kid.

irl i am a very ugly, yet dare i say extremely manly mannish kind of man. the portrait was simply all a part of my scheme to portray myself in a more womanly light to the internet public.

 :-*

real pic, that's me on the far left

fun fact: the black guy's name is Cristoph, and he plays a mean jazz flute

for all the nice colors you have, the aa is really nonexistant overall. The snout looks especially good, the whole piece does, it's just jaggy as hell. I'd go back and organize my lights and darks and beef up the anti-aliasing to really complete this, as well as make the lines and edges a little smoother

Did a small edit on the left ear and eye...

Also i kicked out this desaturated brown color on the face 'cause it was so close in value to its' neighbor, also he was lazy and needed to get a job.

Started mine yesterday, s'taking forever, so I thought posting a wip would pressure me to deliver the goods sooner.

Sure alot of you have seen the piece, Nightmare, Henry Fuseli, one of my all-time favorite dudes.

Right now i'm still toying around with pretty much everything, not in the most efficent way possible, but enjoying myself nonetheless. When this is through I'll definately be taking some artistic liberties with my version that'll seperate it from the original.

Oh wow, I went and wrote up a little critique and even did a quick and dirty edit focusing on the linework, thinking that you did them yourself, but I guess you're just looking for advice on the coloring/shading here. >_<

Well, I'll still try and help ya if i can.

The blue you have on the cape now has noble intentions, but looking at the space it occupies, it just doesn't coordinate with the subtle ambient lighting you have on the arm and hair. In my edit, I reduced it to a simple outline on the edge of the cloth, which I felt more consistant and pleasing.

Also, when you were coloring this, it seems like you were thinking within the borders of the outlines themselves sometimes, and not realizing the full depth of the form you could explore. Some areas you succeeded in, like the right armpit in shadow. Other areas like the part of the cape farthest to the right are what bring it down and make it flat, when you've got the darkest red bordering the whole shape.

I remember not too long ago, I'd get all awesome on things like the deformed arm, where there were small tight lines and constrained  spaces to work in that are comfortable, then I'd move on to a more open space within the same piece(like the cape) and not know what to do with myself. That may be what's going on here, but eventually I learned the importance of blocking in the darks and lights and making myself a good roadmap so i could envision where the figure sits in space before I started pushing pixels. So mess around with that, don't be afraid to bust out the cast shadows, even if they obscure the figure, and don't cross until the little man shows green.

1st post after lurking for about 7000 years(since the very original board i believe? damn i was a youngin' back then). AA is rushed, but i'm slouching terribly in front of my lcd moniter, which is a great way to solve many visual problems you might have btw. :y:
