General Discussion / Re: Spriting/Animating on an iPad?
« on: January 16, 2015, 06:47:32 pm »
I've tried basically all the free art programs on appstore, nothing caught my attention enough to keep. What I found a little while ago is realVNC. You get the app on your ipad and install a program on your pc (VNCserver), this lets you see and control your pc desktop on your ipad. Using this setup, I can tinker with my main toolset from anywhere.
The only downside is your cursor movement is controlled with dragging on the touch screen rather than snapping to where you touch, so it's not possible to paint directly. That being said, it's still adequate enough to push some pixels around on the go!  :)

Pixel Art / Re: [Critique Request] Main Character

On the up and down animations, the character's thighs should be bulkier to match the other two anims. I like the stick lower legs though  :)
On the dive roll, the frame with the 3 diagonal-looking lines looks weird in motion. Maybe bend the character's torso deeper to avoid overstretching the arms, or place the arms/legs differently?

I think an organized approach would be best. I'd establish the main figure's motions first and animate the chains second. You'll need lots of frames to accommodate both. Otherwise you could use your chain frames to also suggest form (they'd lean diagonally on the legs when pushed aside during a step, perhaps?)
I'd love to provide an edit but I think this is a bit over my skill level. That being said, the design of the thing is great, I love the heads  :y:

...you seem to advise 100% saturation in all colors...
I didn't mean that at all, sorry my post wasn't as well articulated as it could have been. Either way you and Alcopopstar certainly conveyed better advice!

I hope the image is self-explanatory  :)
edit: Try to remember that stuff that needs to capture the player's attention (player character, UI icons/health, important environments, baddies, etc) should generally have higher saturation, while lower-key things (usually background elements, UI display, generally unimportant things) can be more grayed out.
While not a rule, it's a simple way to let that player's mind easily organize at a glance what game elements are important, and a simple way to start with game art in general  ;D

I think it might be that triangular cheekbone that's throwing people off? I like the oversized gun style  :P

It's nice but the feet look like they slide forward on the upstep. In frame 3/7 the furthest leg is nice, but frames 4/8 and 1/5 the foot should lift and appear higher than the planted foot. On frame 4/8, kill the highlight on the leg under the knee. Frame 1/5's "standing" pose's feet/legs would benefit from being asymmetrical.
The arms are well executed I think  :)  Cute style!
