I've been spending quite a bit of time with this...I just can't make the gray stuff look like steel/metal at all.

Also any other criticism is nice :)
And the shading on all sides...well. I don't know, I started like that and never changed it.
I'm quite new to Pixel art by the way, and this is my first post. Hi :)

If these tiles are supposed to be in a jungle, I would advise to make them rustier, and add some dents, maybe make then less shiny. That is of course if you want an "old abandoned jungle lab" feel to it.

You are probably right; at the moment it looks as if the grass just sprouted.
Maybe Jungle is not the best word, but regardless, I see what you mean. I'll try adding some rust and dents.

at the moment the light doesn't seem to have a specific purpose, were is it supposed to come from?

Yeah, see, I don't know. I should have started with that in mind, but...well, I didn't. See my first post. :n: to me.
For now I'm just looking to change the steel, I might rework everything later as well.

Take some tips from Metal Slug and make the metal... "dirtier" and more dented and/or scratched.
Some of the tilesets from the original Warcraft and Warcraft II games may help as well.

This isn't really a crit, but the megaman games(starting from the X series) have lots of jungle/wilderness scenes thatmix a mechanical/metallic element with nature. Good inspiration/ideas there.

Nuts, bolts, brackets, steel girders these a few of my favorite things.
To emphasize the mechanical/metal/modernness of something. Put a few more bolts on frankenstein and I'd call him a robot.
If you can't sell the metal by itself, which can be tricky, just put in things that will help people identify it. Though if you can sell it as metal I'd still add a few extra bits. Metal is usually higher in contrast than a matte object like tree bark or paper. It reflects more like than it diffuses since it's a smooth material. Usually.

What about rust, corrosion, cracks, texture? Plants like to break up structures by the smallest gap.
