Title: Triumvirate [WIP]
Post by: Lazycow on January 02, 2010, 02:24:18 pm
Just a game mockup where the player can switch between three characters with specific abilities. A human, a robot and a rabbit. The human can use items and different suits (yeah, sexy), rabbit has telekinetic abilities and the robot can lift heavy stuff.

Pretty much WIP of course, C&C are welcome.

That rabbit is awesome! Definitely my favorite part. The girl is great too, and the robot seems like he will be good, once he is finished. I suggest looking at Ptoings stuff on pixeljoint, he has a great way of rendering robots.

It still seems pretty early, so my crits are basically on what I think you should work on.

- The angle and style of the smashing things seems off. The tileset has an interesting type of style of these big squares, very blocky and reveling in it's pixelness, then the smashers are so smooth, too smooth. It's like every corner and edge has been smoothed up. Tr and blockify them and move away from that boring pure grey ramp.

- I don't think the smashers need to have the same angle as the tiles, in fact I think if they were direct side views it would look better.

- I like the style of the tiles, with the big pixels and all. I'd just take it a little farther, add in significantly more variation. Right now the fact that it repeats every single tile is really obvious.

Any keep up the good work. And seriously, I love that rabbit.

There's a degree of banding on all three characters. Might want to try to get rid of that.

I like the general look and feel of it all.

Ok, Heroes first... Ptoing's big robot is really great, but I cannot reproduce that shading style.
I also tried to address that banding-problem, but I am not sure if I see every form of banding. Did I fix it?

Update: some shadings on the background

@NaCl: The smashers did not fit, indeed. But I wanted to use platforms, so maybe the smashers look better when the standard walls have more depth. Better?

The biggest bef I have with the smashers is the lighting. The top has a lighter colour than the rest, however looking at your tileset i seems the other way around. This confuses the eye and it has no clue what to see the smasher as. I like the texture your going with on the rock. :)

As for the characters, I personally think the robot sticksout to much compared to the girl and the rabbit. Feels like a different style. I may be wrong though so wait for someone else's ctit first before you go and alter it.

The "smasher" is seen from an angle.

i think the problem with the smashers is that there's no evidence that the platforms they're hanging from are at the same angle as the ground platforms

I tried to show some evidence that the smashers have the same angle as the ground platforms. Thanks Tuna.  ;) Also, I tried to fix the lighting of the stones, but I do not like the final result very much. Seems like I need some more practice for backgrounds.

The characters are interesting, but indeed, the smashers seems of. I noticed that top and bottom of them doesn't look to have the same geometry, (bottom looks more angular). You might want to add a shadow to the "pillar" that moves it.

1 picture = 100 words, so ...
* platform tops didn't match lightning of the smashers. did a few tries
* feet don't read well on edited platform tops -> a shadow improves that
* shadow added. Pillars are still a bit too narrow to be convincing -> Doubled them
* tried shadows on the "grasp" of the smasher. Not 100% convinced of my own edit.

Ah, thanks PypeBros! I wanted to declare it as finished, but your edit give me some ideas for an improved version. I really like your version of this top platform with the rabbit.

Yet another update, trying to honor some of PypeBros' suggestions by changing some colors and tweaking these platforms.
Looks "well behaved". Maybe a bit too well behaved... Also, it seems like I have problems to draw a blue robot in front of blue sky  ;)

a lot of the aa on the platforms is still tailored for a darker BG, otherwise this looks much nicer what with the sky and all
