Title: Favorite Non-pixel Art
Post by: Faktablad on March 17, 2006, 05:31:27 am
What is your favorite non-pixel-art art by anyone?

I really admire the colors and lighting of this painting by John Singer Sargent:

Thomas Cole is also a favorite of mine.  Some of his landscapes:

Yesindeedy, his stuff is very nice. Craig Mullins' stuff is very nice as well. Great style.
Everybody knows Feng Zhu (http://www.artbyfeng.com)

My two favorite artists of all time happen to be M.C. Escher and Salvador Dali. < Greatness.  8)

Edit: whoops, I meant Feng Zhu. Fixed.

I too, love their works. M.C. Escher has become somewhat an icon in illusionary art. Appeals to me on both aesthetic and technical levels.
I don't know, there are so many good artists out there...

Dali and Escher are two of my favorites as well.  I have books and books of both of their works, and Escher's lectures in transcript.

I tend not to favor artists so much as individual pieces, however other artists that moved me enough times for me to remember them are Caravaggio, Albrecht Durer, and a few of the first american portrait painters (we're talking like colonial times here)

Chuck close is my favorite artist of all time.

(http://www.whitney.org/learning/art/close-1969-420-1.jpg) - Airbrush

(http://media.walkerart.org/3117480.jpg) - hand painted

(http://www.pupress.princeton.edu/sichuan/woman32.jpg) - fingerprints

All of his works are gigantic too. His work changed to that gridded style you see in the second one after he was paralyzed from the neck down. After years of training, he gained the ability to move his left arm. Not the hand, but the arm. So he attached a brush to his arm, and started painting again. And honestly, i like his newer works alot more than the older:

Talk about Computer Aesthetic. Very interesting. I wonder what's his theoretical background for doing pixel art on canvas.

"alloverness".  Chuck Close should be your favorite artist Helm.   ;D  I think I read somewhere that Close also painted like Maxfield Parrish, in that he would lay down only reds first, then blues, then yellows... to arrive at his colors on the canvas as if he were a printer.  Friggen nuts.

My favourite artist will forever be Max Ernst because he has shown me my dreams. It is on his strength that I deny traditional 'put detail where you want the eye to be drawn' bullshit and it is in pieces like Europe After The Rain II where I realise that every subject is a landscape, and every landscape is a portrait. Intentionality and texture, frottage and blotting. Truly revolutionary, the most important surrealist and an artist every one of you owes it to themselves to look into.

But yes, his Chuck Close dude is very interesting and it's wonderful that I become aware of him at this point in my life. I will investigate.

Yeah, I saw his process somewhere in a book. It's one of the main reasons why i even like him.

I dont really have much painting culture to apport something really meaningful to this topic, I'm more of just blown away by what Helm posted of Max Ernst, but I'll do my best :p

like everyone and their brother I admire Dhali, I completly loathe that melting clocks painting, it's one of his most boring works and because it's been so over-exposed people tend to understimate and sterotype Dalhi.
I like him because of the insane compositions he can do like in "the halucinogenic toreador" http://imagesource.allposters.com/images/pic/PF_NEW%5C09_09_2005_C/PF_1204265~El-torero-alucinogeno-1969-70-Posteres.jpg and the ascension http://www.chubber.net/images/the-ascension-of-christ-1958.jpg also how he messed with pixelart http://www.raymondjames.com/art/images/dali.jpg, but what really really wins me over, is that he did an stereogram where two diferent images superimpose to create an image that is two at the same time http://www.thedumbestgrunges666.blogger.com.br/Salvador%20Dali%20-%20Metamorphosis%20of%20Narcissus.jpg that just killed my artist pride right there. http://www.museoreinasofia.es/coleccion/img_obras_grande/Autoretrato52e7dd0724ca539fd4a52976609805d8.jpg look! ha, the bastard even went cubist XD.

I also really enjoy MetalGear's Yoji Shinkawa, because of how his imaginary sketches have almost real-life deep facial expressions.

I really like some stuff of Dali and respect many of the things he did, but he also did loads of wack shit. One being is selling and handing out presigned empty sheets of paper, which leads to the fair assumption that about 70% of all drawings signed Dali were not actually created by him, but by other artists mimicing him more or less. Also it's estimated that about 30% of "his" paintings were not done by him, again by other artists mimicing his style.

About " look! ha, the bastard even went cubist XD." What's so special about that? He did not invent cubism, it was a movement before his height as an artist and he made that painting when he was rather young, just trying out styles he was inpired by.

That being said, he made some paintings which are extraordinary as far as art history goes. Afaik he was the first artist to ever put a popular brand icon (the coca cola bottle to be specific) into one of his paintings, quite some time before Andy Warhol and the other Pop-Artists.

And he did a pixelation of some guys portrait in one of his images. I dunno which tho, i think it's rather obscure on prolly not on the net. I have a HUGE Dali book in Germany, which should be shipped over soonish. When it comes i will scan some of his more obscure stuff and post it here.

I wish. Mastering any trad media is a much bigger achievement than mastering any digital media imo. Undo amongst other things is the ultimately cheating if you consider trad media.

Also, I was astonished by Fuseli and Turner. Especially with Turner. Turner rocks. A lot.
