Hey. Just wanted some critique. I mostly followed tutorials making these, though...

 Make the skin tones have shadows and highlights that have different hue values and give it with good contrast. Don't use too much skin tone colors really. 2 or 3 shades would be good. I would make him bigger, he's too small.

Besides what Andy said, mess around with the colors. It doesn't necessarily need to be larger. I see you're using Tsugumo's tut. :)
spriteart.com has a really good one too, in a different style. I tend to favor that one. ;)
