Title: TinyPixels - Politicians
Post by: PixelHug on December 19, 2009, 12:46:57 pm
Hey,

I'm doing a series of tiny characters, using as few pixels possible, whilst retaining enough detail to be able to bring some personality to each character.

Let me know what you think! :)

I think that it could be done much better if you dropped the black lines and instead used that space for details.

I'm italian, and I think that your Berlusconi has way too much hair.  :D

I think if you varied their poses to fit their attitudes it would probably make them more convincing. If you increase the contrast and color the interior black lines you will find that you get much more bang for your pixel! This is because the contrast will make their colors easier to separate from the surrounding ones, and coloring the outlines will decrease the perceived size of the lines. Using black lines on the inside of stuff like this would be like trying to paint a figure on a note card with a 1 inch wide brush - Unwieldy and inaccurate.

I must admit I intentionally used the black outlines purely for effect; but you're all right, using appropriately coloured outlining would produce more detail.  I'll give it a try on a few of them and post the results!  It would certainly enable me to more accurately show how little hair Berlusconi has :D

On the subject of poses I wanted to keep all my tinypixels characters in an identical pose (I'll be doing lots more), achieving anything other than this pose is tricky anyway with so few pixels to play with.  However I admit you're right, If I were able to more accurately replicate their stances it would make them more recognisable.

I understand it's supposed to be small, but when it's this small you really can't recognize any of them.

A nice trick you can do is exaggerate the the head size. This will give you more room to pixel, while still keeping them relatively small and more recognizeable.

Also, Obama looks like the blackface with the pink lips. It's borderline offensive D:

I fear I have to agree with buddy90 here. Without the names I would have no clue who they are supposed to be. Sarkozy looks more like Jacko than anything facewise.
