Title: Helm/Ptoing collab (update 23rd of march)
Post by: ptoing on March 10, 2006, 07:28:23 pm
Helm and me started this shortly before the original Pixelation got hacked and wanted to finish it once pix was up again.
Pix being down for ages, jobs and life stopped up from working on it more.
But now we are determined on finishing it, and not only finishing it but bringing the old bits up to our current skill level

Basically i did all the dark tiles and helm the slightly lighter ones

I was just about to ask if you were ever going to start this back up. I'm glad you have; it is a quite impressie work.  Methinks there are a couple of tiles (the top left corner and the dudes at the bottom) that were not there the time I saw it last.  I suppose they were posted between my last viewing of the old forum and its demise.  I can't wait to see this finished!

The big yellow one has always looked off balance to me. He needs a leg, or arm, or something to brace him. Even if he's a big worm of a thing there's just too much mass to be so straight up. I would think anyway.

Yeah, when we're done with the tiles and move on to overal tweaking, I'm going to be adding an arm or something to prop him. There's going to be a lot of work after tileage. About 10% of the work will be after we're done playing turns, really. All the optimization, extra AA and fixes...

I remember this pic, it's looking truly stunning. Gonna be interesting to see how you are gonna pull that black sky in the top corner into the pic smoothly.

I kinda wish the gun-blasting chess piece section (although very pretty) was removed, just because the piece as a whole is so damned gorgeous I want to see it completed pristine. Nice job, both of you.

holy collaborative crazy hued goodness batman! has it been one year already?

keep it up boys, I agree with adam the crazy chesspiece fest should be done away with, it's too late to integrate it into the picture.

Awesome job Helm, I love the hueshifts on that cable and the glowy golem kicks ass!
I will get onto my tile on monday (typing this from my flatmates ibook, no promotion here)

About the chesspiece thing, it obviously started as a fun thing Helm threw in there at some point and i added to it and he added to it. We thought about removing it, but came to the conclusion that it belongs to the piece now even tho it makes no sense at all (even less than the rest of the picture)

The whole thing is random to begin with and if it has something that resembles a composition than that's mostly due to luck as nothing was planned here. The only rational choice we made so far was that we should move the chess stuff over to the top left because it was making the thing too rightheavy being on the right.

We really need a blue highlight, or to say, we COULD have used it earlier in the design. Hueshifts are fine, but the glowy golem should have been blue blue blue bright blue white really. We can't rely on everything turning yellow when we want it to be lighter. Or maybe we can, for this piece, it's not like we haven't done more improbable unifications... Oh well.

Good point there, inclusion of white and a buffer colour to the brightest blue would help for cetain highlights for sure.

The lack of support for the big guy makes me think he's falling down in that instance of that time. I would think that support is optional, providing the picture isn't stable.
Extremely cool.
I'd say it's the best collaboration I've seen. :o
...Anyways, as soon as you finish this monstrosity....

Nice to see this brilliant tile collab still has legs. Watching this piece grow at pixelation is one of my fondest memories of the old hub.

This and the "I Hate Sals" fad is what made me want to get better at pixel art. Good to see it's alive again.

Thx, but with this attitude you have lost as an artist. Practise is everything. Lots of it. Since I started pixeling in april 2003 I pixeled alot of stuff in my freetime and since almost a year I work as a professional pixelartist so i get plenty of practise every day, and i also study demoscene and oldschool gameart quite a bit. It all helps. Just saying "omg this is impossible, i could never do this" is just as good as giving up.

Yes I am, I work and I also have other things I do apart from working on this collab. btw, you are 1 strike away from having 3 strikes, just informing you ;)

Har! I am working on it. My homepage has a shite infrastructure and is hence a bit tedious to update, esp after over 1 year of slacking.

Hehe quite the little collection of various golems we've got going on the bottom row. I'll do my tiles tonight, I'll probably try to do one of the more difficult ones (next to the stone formation, perhaps) so we can get a bit unstuck since we seem to be doing easy golems to stall the fact that we eventually HAVE to go back to the dinoguy and the left part.

Guys, give Ptoing a break with the time schedule :P He's living the dream, doing pixels for a living! I sit here and draw comics and pet my cat. I've time.

If nobody else posts after me, this post reserved for art.

Haha! Coventry is a shithole and you know it.

I reckon a return visit from the Luftwaffe would probably make it prettier on average. ;)

It used to be prettier than stratford you know...? back in the day... those incediaries really did the work. Blooming 1950's design... what a disgrace. (mind you, the swan theatre ain't exactly the most cutting edge of architechural icons is it?)

I'm in leam btw - nice to have another old skool pixeler in these parts... once upon a time the place was crawling with them (thanks to codies) - that was before the dark side came and ruined it all, before the dreaded Z-Axis...

:)

two sky tiles to finish up with the sky eventually, and a tile of rockage which proved to be more interesting than not. You have a bottom red secondary lightsource to deal with now, ptoing!
