One thing Ill say is it really helps if the background isn't as contrasted as the ground, you'll find your characters may get lost. Just make sure there's a more obvious seperation otherwise it can be quite stressful on your eyes, especially at this scale. It pushes the background to the back and foreground to the front as it's where your eyes focus to.

Bit rough atm, I'd experiment with different palette tones and start refining details working on the tile set. Keep it up.  :y:

maybe rather than going straight from brown where the candle is lighting the background, to purple, you could shift a little more gradually from brown to purple.  Heres a sort of slopy edit

but also, I think the transition between the shades around the light need to be a little smoother, because now it looks sort of like different peices rather than 1 whole background that happens to be lighter in one spot.

Here's a quick rough edit adding to R1k's.

I think the main thing now is to get it looking natural. Like the wall is under differant lighting. Rather then a weird coloured pancake.

Made a quick edit

take care of the lights strength and the radius of it aswell how far it goes...added pillars for the sake of filling the level aswell and
some other stuff to make it moody, like the walls and so on and fire.
