I've got so-far with this pixelling, but because it's so huge, I'm finding it very difficult to continue with this darned hat... I want it to be straw, with some detail but not every single piece of straw having to be shaded. Please help me! I want to use the colours that I've already got on the piece.

The shape of the hat isn't right either ???

straw hat brims are basically concentric circles radiating out from the crown as texture.
whatever u do tho, please only "suggest" the straw, as if u render it in too intricate detail, it will divert completely your attention from where it should be, the face and the particularly striking eyes.

the trouble is you're putting straw texture onto a cloth hat. It won't look right unless you change the shape or material :/
Steve - nice refs :).

ndchristie is right.
Also how the hat sits on her head does not look proper. Draw a rough line where her skull and the hair would be and then adjust the hat accordingly.
Keep it up :)

not strictly true about the hats guys sorry.
