Title: [WIP] Yet Another Dragon
Post by: 9_6 on September 15, 2009, 03:04:12 pm
Trying to get myself back into the swing of things by drawing a dragon.
Somehow I always end up drawing those :-\
Oh well here's the current progress:

Worked on it for a couple of hours until I had no idea what else to add/fix.
I might fiddle around with the colors and some of the shading later.

If you spot an error or have a suggestion how to improve it, feel free to mention it.

Edit: okay I think I'm done, I'm still open for suggestions though.

You have some great details on the dragon itself, but I think that the background is taking away from it.  it's too bright, and its large areas of color kinda distract from the main piece.  I would, based on the dragon itself, also expect them to be a bit more tightly pixeled.  The head might could also use some more definition at the top to distinguish it from the backgroun.
Anyway, there's some truly awesome pixeling here; it just needs to be brought out a bit more, I think.

Good points, thanks. Looking back to it, that background really was a bit over the top.
I generally dislike drawing backgrounds because I sit there, having no idea what to draw where when it comes to those.

But since I wanna improve a bit, I shall leave my comfort zone so I finally got to work on it some more, tweaked the colours and the shading a bit and remade the background.
Here's the result:

Much better. The bg helps a lot, it better defines the thing's outline. Conceptually now, it looks like I'm seeing a dragon on  the foreground just kinda sittin' there roaring and blowing out some flames vainly, as if to say, "yeah fear me, look at the chaos I just caused", to explain the fire in the bg. Pretty cool. Why not some firey highlights from either lightsource bouncing off of the dragon?
