Title: more spectrum dragon

trying to see how far i can push this thing and keep to spectrum restrictions, thought I should get some people to look at it.
(spectrum: two colours per 8*8, each tile is either bright or dark, can't be both)

Not sure how well it would work, but since black is 'free' you might as well try some dithering?

Check what I'm doing with the leg.

The technique Helm is using will really help you define forms.
The wings/hands don't make any sense to me. Doesn't make any sense in the sketch either. Might be a bad design or my lack of sleep.

The arms are supposed to be preying mantis-like appendages I'm thinkin'. I really don't like the blocks coloring. Reminds me of backbuffer garbage artifacts or some other erroneous output. This is an enjoyable project, though. I'm curious what additional graphics may be planned for it. Scary palette, man.

I don't like Helm's edit. I see what he's trying to do, but the black just really kills it. I'm a bit torn between the lesser of two evils looking at both images. I always get this from spectrum images though. Using the blue from the sky in the dragon als seems like a bad idea, it interferes with the visual identity of the dragon on top of the sky.

Maybe the black would work if not 50% dithered but something more stylized?

i don't really have the hang of dithering, gotta keep at it.

the wings are deliberately gimpy, like t-rex arms.

Yeah, that kind of works ditherwise.

Left leg (ours) is planted lower than right though, gives the impression the dragon is off balance. Easy fix, relocate left considerable pixels higher

Yes.

Maybe it's just me but I'd go with a perfect circle moon, not the more smudgy one you've got but otherwise, given how you've decided to go about this I'd say you've succeeded. Perhaps some red ambiance around the eyes of the dragon or something? Might be too difficult but it might also just be a good challenge!

think i'll use this moon variant:

i don't know how to make the redeye look good though, had a couple goes at that already.

i'm still hoping someone will tell be where all the character errors are, i don't know how to check that, short of going through real careful and doing it by eye. which i might do, actually, it sounds like a thing i would do.

while i'm asking for stuff, i'm hoping somebody knows about typography will tell me how they'd do the title texts. do we have a fontspert?
