Title: A robot (wip)
Post by: robotriot on May 12, 2009, 12:57:21 am
Hey, I finally started doing some pixeling again. I'm mainly posting this very early stage to keep myself motivated to continue working on it, but c&c are welcome as usual. The crappy colours are subject to change of course, but it's kind of late and my colour value judgment has already shut down.

Why is everything so dark? I can barely see it.

From what little I can see, it looks like the barrel coming out of his mouth is sloping down too steeply.

I changed the barrel and fixed the brightness a little. It's mostly finished now.

I like the head, lots, but what comes after lacks alot of volume and definition. I think this could benefit from a secondary lightsource, revealing more of the shape, and what is going on beyond the head..

Also this could benefit from a lot of clean up, lots of messy lines and edges here, which is not what robotriot has used me to. You're banding at certain places too. Go the extra mile for this piece.

Also, Heavy Metal without any speculars on it? Curious choice. Not wrong, but curious.

Updated. I actually don't intend to bring out the rest of the robot too much, since I want the focus of the image to be on the head. I think I fixed some of the other issues though and I also adjusted the palette slightly. No major specular highlights since it has an anti-reflective coating on it to reduce the chance for optical detection ;)

the big problem is not seeing the rest, atm he seems quite awkward and the whole gun thing structurally unsound/inaccurate as a result

This is what the entire robot looks like. Technically at this picture detail you'd have to see his right arm, but I think showing it would only increase visual clutter in that area.

Well, you could put the arm back there in silhouette/duotone, something like you did in that sketch, that exact same level of detail.
