Title: Death Note Sprites
Post by: MegaLeon on May 07, 2009, 12:55:28 pm
Hi all
I'd like some suggestions for these Death Note sprites i'm making for a game. I'm quite satisfied with L's design, but i feel like Light is still missing something.

Any comments?

Huh... I guess you got a point there.
Anyway, He should be writing on that book

Is that an adult magazine he's reading  sure looks like it.
That, and you should choose a lightsource and work on the contrast.

Haha. Uh yeah . . . Well, I thought he was trying to stuff something into a black mailbox, on his lap.

I think they're pretty nice- L's particularly is really "characterful" (if that's a word, heh).

As for Light, the animation doesn't translate very well -- if i wasn't aware of the anime I'd think he was... um... what Jonathan said. With sprites of that site it's difficult to capture subtle motions like writing... perhaps keeping his upper body still would help.

And yes, the colors could use  more contrast, as well as more shading. :D

EDIT: Attempt at an edit. (http://i481.photobucket.com/albums/rr177/Mikebissle/LightYagamiEdit.png)

Whoa, nice edit! The face reminds me of Ken from Street Fighter Alpha 3, maybe because of the eyebrows and the teeth :P

Thanks guys, tried to follow your advice, but i think i still don't get right that contrast thing.

i THINK YOU SHOULD ANIMATE HIS EYES MOVING LEFT TO RIGHT OR VICEVERSA AND ALSO THE HEAD LIKE WHEN YOUR WRITING YOU MOVE YOUR HEAD TO WHERE THE PENCILS AT RIGHT?

I'm sorry to say, but that doesn't look like L at all, just some generic manga character.

Regardless if you're going for the movie version or manga version, L should be more hunched over, with a more bent back. His posture is really rather unique, imo.

Also, I actually think that Ken'ichi Matsuyama is way cooler in the movies, than what the L character in the manga is, so I would recommend that you study his face and hair to add more character to your sprite.

On the sprite:  I see no significant difference between the new edit and the old, though it doesn't look like he's.. yeah.  anymore.  I think subtle movements for this type of animation, look into subpixeling.  Only arm motion and maybe eye motion.  Maybe have him turn a page?  Remember, to animate effectively, you need at least 3 frames, though 4 is usually preferable.
