Title: The Deep
Post by: Opacus on May 02, 2009, 02:20:56 pm
Well, recently the B.O.B said alot of usually active pixelers aren't active at all anymore. And I really believe I'm one of them.
It's been ages since I did any personal pixels. And I think I really need to be doing something again.
So here it is:

(http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8703/thedeep.gif) Update 1: (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/536/thedeep2.gif)

I'm pretty content with it so far. Jellyfish are awesome.
I'm using alot of pictures of jellyfish as my reference, with as most prominent:

This one inspired me to make this in the first place, I came across it after browsing some COW challenges over at ConceptArt:

It's a really beautiful work in fact.
I'm waiting to see how it could evolved.

Thanks for the positive comments!

Here's an update again:

Started refining. I'll start adding a background soon. Probably a coral reef with some ruin in it, some more jellyfish in the background.
14 colours currently.

it's a flame lookalike ,now ?

I find it strange that it has a lot of contrast below the cap. I would also try and capture the slight blur/opaqueness of the cap like in your refs.

It looks great, but if you used anti-alias on the tentacles it would look even better.

It almost looks like a painting, it's so cool.

Regards,
   Steve.

Yes, that's kind of the idea. A very bright, nearly flame like creature in a blue ocean.

I've decided to temporarly put the Dreadnought on hold and finish this first. I was away for a week and looking back at the Dreadnought I realise I should follow Nd's advice, and create something more 'alive'.
For now, I want to finish this one. I'm too proud of it not to finish it, would be a waist. So here I go with the latest version.

I'm not to sure about those darker bits in the water. But it looks so bland without anything. hmm...

Funny, I'm working on a similar image for the Fairchild Channel F right now. It's not so colorful, of course! ;D I'll post it in about a week.

I don't know the stringy things look weird. try to work on them a little bit.
Maybe use some dithering or AA. ???

Yes the strings will definatly be AA'd as soon as I fill in the rest of the background.
But it has to wait until it is nearly done.

Minor Update:

I'm also considering a darker mood. Which do you prefer?

I like the "darker mood" but the jelly is now perhaps too vibrant against the darker background? The bubbles, though, look tremendous on the darker water.

Yeah I thought so aswell. I think I kind of like that extra vibrance. It was already pretty vibrant, but this dark background brings out the jelly's even better.
I kind of want them to look like they're actually a sort of floating lights. And this helps me achieve it.

Definately the darkly mooded version is better. I think dark backgrounds always make pixelArt look better. Funny, i am completely clueless about the reason of it.

The new, dark, version is spectacular. Keep up the improvement.

hey mede-nederlander! ;-)

I'm all for the darker one too. The big jellyfish colors can stay as is, they can glow right?
Perhaps the image coud get more depth by slightly lowering the saturation of the smaller jellyfish. And maybe skew their hue towards a bit more green/blue? Just slightly, to give a sense of distance.

Keep up the good work!

Hallo ;)

Yeah you make a good point about the brightness of the other Jellyfish. How's this?

And thanks infinitegames and Joseph!

Furthermore I think this is nearly done.
Some AA on the long...ehm...things. I have no idea what to call them.
And maybe some final touches. And then I think I can call this done.

bijna! :)

Right now the smaller jellyfish's tentacles are too bright red. I think your left jellyfish was better in your previous edit.
Now, its red seem almost as bright as the red tentacles on the big jellyfish.

Got a good point there.
How about this?

I also finished AAing the tentacles, and some other parts I thought needed some AA.
Think I can call it done now.

Anyone disagree, though?  ;)

>( I disagree. It looks awesome, especially the colours :3 But it still looks unfinished.

You still have some more AAing to do, there are still quite a few jaggy areas.
Your smallest bubbles on the right hand side come off more as lines rather than bubbles, I would either make them 2x2 squares or 1x1.
I think the leftmost jellyfish should still be pushed more into the background as currently it seems to compete a bit with the main jellyfish.
Maybe give your main JF some more breathing room and expand the top of the canvas by maybe 20~ pixels.
Also, perhaps give the main stem some stronger highlights. I think that would help make that area look a little less flat and it will add more coherence to your main JF. At the moment I feel the stem is a bit unrelated to the top part.

I'm glad I have you guys to keep me from posting stuff prematurelly  :D

Here's another update which hopefully tackles most of your points Skamocore.

I've tried to AA every jaggy I saw left in there. Hope that's done now, but I tend to miss thing when it comes to the refining.
So please, if you see some jaggies that you really think look bad, I'd apreciate if you'd point em out.

I edited the bubbles, not in the way you suggested but I hope it works either way.
I didn't really agree on the left jellyfish. In my eyes it looks fine, I'd need some second opinion on that.
I also personally think the canvas is fine like this.

I did add some lighter highlights to the stem though.
