Title: [WIP] My first animations
Post by: Chuu on April 05, 2009, 09:16:00 am
This is my first walk, run and.. deep breath? Cx The idea was like he's taking in the smell of fresh bread.
Well I've already gotten some critique and help from Jad but I haven't fixed all things yet. He also helped me get them transparent so hopefully it will work. (apparently not)

I noticed some days ago that explorer didn't show the animations as they should be so I had to change them while having a headache for 2 days. @  3@ But they will probably move the way they should now.

Critique and Comments are warmly welcome. :3

Just wanted to say I really like your animations, I couldnt let this one go without, at the very least, a comment.
For your first attempt you blew mine out of the water... in fact you could probably teach me a thing or two about animating.
I was just wondering if you were thinking about adding a little bit of head movement going left to right on the run animation, just a thought.

I love it and cant wait to see a finished version! nice work.

Great job on your first animations!  It seems like you already understand slow ins and slow outs so thats good for a beginner.  Right now they work pretty well, but if you wanted to add more you can add a bit of rotation for the heads.  Nothing extreme though.  Furthermore you could add a head bob(the way you do that is by thinking where the head would be pulled down after the foot striking the ground) to the running animation, but that may be a bit much.  If you really wanted to go all out you could drag body parts.  For example as the body is moving down drag the head so it catches up to the body at a later time.  You could even drag shoulders a frame behind when you feel it would.  In addition to that you can drag the hands(by changing how the art looks)  I'll make you an edit when I'm not on my DSi :D

As for the baker I think you could get the smelling point across better if you tilted his head back to the point where you can see the silhouette of his nose.  Also make his inhale and exhale really exaggerated.  Plus it!

Anyway good luck with your animations, as a beginner you should feel proud of what you have now.

Thanks for all the comments. I will try and make the one breathing a little more exaggerated. It can only look better. ;D
About the head swing in the run, I'll probably try making the head swing a little but I don't know if it will look good since I don't really swing my head when I am running, for example.

[useless ass-pat]Amazing for a first try.  Clearly though, you've animated before.(?)  Well done.  I hope I'll be able to help.[/useless ass-pat]

I think you could step up the movement in the run a little, it feels a little mechanical right now.  Give it some life! (transparented for you):

I just made the hat move, and rotated the head.  Too lazy for anything else.
Not really sure about the hat..  I assumed it is an explorers hat?  If so, look at Henry Hatsworth's Puzzling adventure (on the NDS.)  Good, spunky animation in there, and a dude not unlike yours with an explorer hat!

I can elaborate later, I have to go now.
Take from it what you will.

Later

Wow! I really love your edit! :D
I tried to animate the hat before but I it didn't go that well. But I will try again now! I really gave the run more life and personality.

No, this is really my first time ever.

Here's a new update of the run. I made the head swing a bit and made the hat bounce a little.

How does it look?

All I really see is Jad's run animation and not much of yours in there. Maybe it would have been better if you'd tried animating completely on your own first? I think it would have had more of your style in it that way.

Haha, as much as I am totally charmed out by the resemblance (feels like my pixel art style had kids or something : D ), I agree with this point! At the same time this kind of snappy run is right in line with my preferences (hmm, I guess why), so I like that particular direction.

Right now I feel that it's a bit TOO snappy, whereas the run I did was me trying to create maximum smoothness and readability without using an excessive amount of frames, I feel this mainly borrows the snappiness from mine, but not the small details I did to smooth it out.

So chuu CHEW <3 I'd suggest you actually try to reduce the snappiness - every frame where something appears to stand still compared to the last one - change something just a little, so that it acts like an inbetween instead of a pause. I'm mainly talking about arms and legs here. I'd like to see this smoothed out generally, actually. It would be fitting for an explorer-kind of guy as well, seeing as that kind of guy would probably be a little heavy, thus having to more bounce-jog than snappy-run. (grammar successfully destroyed)

Soo.. More joggy, less snappy, more smooth! Also more bounce! Give this guy some own character, think about who he is and go from there! See if you can get some movements in there that convey some of his character!

Also you know I'm totally impressed by all of this, I had no idea you'd GET the animation/pixel art thing so fast. There is still much to be learned, though, so lurk the forums and POST more! Post that mailman guy!
