Title: [WIP] Paradise Uncharted Final Tiles (MMORPG - Fuseline Studios)
Post by: slym on March 09, 2009, 12:57:39 am
Ok well I am like new here, this is like my 2 or 3 post lol. I would like to know what all of you think of the new tileset, and how I can improve it. Especially the sprite:
(btw: Paradise Uncharted is not a mockup game, this is a real mmorpg)

[edit]

I changed things up a bit. This is a new sprite:

and I am working on changing the tiles completely:

Thankyou,

It would be nice of you to post the sprites individually along with the tiles, instead of in-game screenshots(I'm assuming they are, even if mockups, still). Going to throw some crits at you in a few.

P.S. I just noticed, you saved your images in JPG/JPEG, as a note this shouldn't be done in pixel art, consider it taboo. Instead, save in GIF or PNG.

yeah they will be in .png once the new engine for the game is done. (it will be able to support .png files) then I can add shadows ^.^

I personally think the characters need to be a bit smaller, especially in comparison to nature around them, so you should either make things like the trees larger or take down the size of the people, I'd suggest taking down the size of the people because since this is for an MMO you probably have to make alot of armor, etc, also you can then focus your attention on larger than life enemies, this is an mmo, you'll probably be playing with friends, so why not take on giant golems? I recreated your statue, your statue was too uh, soft-looking, to rid of this problem you add in harsher contrast, essentially make it shinier, human head as comparison. I also edited the health bar so it looks a bit more pleasing, instead of the normal solid bar, just throwing that out there though.

From what I've noticed your people aren't very... real looking and they're also suffering from the fact that they're not in the right perspective, you need to think top-down, like you're looking from above, not like you're looking right at the person. You should look up a bit on perspective, also looking up some anatomy wouldn't hurt at all, it will help your people stand out and look more like heroes.

I hope I've helped some, good luck with your project, I would do an edit on the trees but with the current jpg state I'm just too lazy to take the time to clean it and edit it, though, the person I did isn't an edit, I made him from scratch but for the tree I'd probably just do an edit.

I think bengoshia already mentioned the contrast issue, but I think you should really try messing up the contrast for the overall image. Sprite wise, if you were to compare bengoshia's edit and yours, one of the most obvious thing is that the character outline is not straight by the limbs... it makes the character way too stiff.

It's not a taboo. It is not encouraged because the jpg compression is destructive.

Your palette has problems. Contast, like was mentioned, but also the overall coloring is funky, I dunno, it all seems too warm. Your character doesn't stand out from bg enough. Those trees look unfinished, the style seems rough, more impressionistic than other stuff.

Why not post images of your RPG world at the same resolution/dimensions the game will be played at? This will better convey how the finished product will look and feel.

Also, I'm confused by your thread title saying WIP and final tiles. If they're final, don't post them here, you'll just get all kinds of edits and new ideas. Once you've decided something is done but then new, possibly better, ideas are presented it can be painful to either leave everything as is knowing it could be better, or have to go back and modify things after you thought you were done, that can feel like a waste of time.

About it saying final tileset: What I mean by that is that I am not changing the style (colors are not included in style). I have changed the tiles for Paradise Uncharted over 6 times. Each time was a different style.

The only thing we can possibly critique on then is your color count, I'm not sure what you're trying to say with this post. The people/tiles that you currently have are in a certain "style"? We won't be able to help much if we're so limited to what we can say about it, remember, we come here to help people seeking it and we will critique whatever style you have if we see faults in it, its all just for making your piece better though, mind you. Please explain your post in further detail though, I'm a bit confused.

P.S. Sorry Helm, I've just always thought of it to be taboo, it seems like it has been.

oh sorry i didn't really specify. Someone above said to not call it the Final Tileset. But yeah, please critique everything. I want to make this as good as possible.
