Title: Two Face Challenge [warning: wiggly manparts]
Post by: Souly on March 05, 2009, 12:21:39 pm
Inspired by ptoing on this one me thinks.
The challenge was to make a 100x100 "portrait" of a two-faced character.
This didn't qualify so it wasn't entered in the mean time I'll work on it till I think it's done I guess.

Animation is optional.

I think the angry guys movement is disturbing the the blue guys calm image, if you know what I mean. Perhaps you should make the red guys torso moving a little bit less and let the blue guy imprison by hes charming butterfly

Less movement.

Edit: Big thanks to gniotp for some tips. :]

I would focus the animation on the faces a bit more. Also, one of the stipulations is that the image be a portrait.

I like it a lot, but I'm inclined to agree with Doppleganger.

Yea when I posted this on PJ I asked about it.
I had asked Cure and Larwick about it on MSN, and both of them said pretty much the same thing.
I was aware that it didn't match the challenge thus the quotation marks on "portrait"
Kind of makes me peaved, this is the second time I've gone to the canvas for a challenge without reading the full post.
The last one I just tossed after finding out it was no good for what it was intended for.

I don't really see the problem. unless is specifically says it has to be like a head and shoulders portrait. a portrait can be full body, it can have an environment behind it, or lots of other stuff. a portrait doesn't have to be conventional.
However, maybe you could really put some nice rendering and polish in the faces to bring them out.

While the turning of the head adds a lot, I'm not sure about what I think is the turning of the legs. I think it would be better if the body twisted rather than the legs shifting left to right. If you keep them anchored makes the attention drawn towards the parts that matter more.

I dunno, I feel that the piece has a certain humor that you can't quite capture without a wiggling penis.  :D

What, are you offended by his cartoon penis?
It's not my fault they can never decide what to wear.

I think you need to keep his jingle jangle dangle. It has an oddly hypnotic movement to it. If I had a penny for every time I said that... I'd have a few pennies by now.

The red side needs more shadow. Clean up those black lines too. I think you should flip the placement of the blue side's hand, that'd allow you to change the arm to something reasonably close to bone structure. It seems uninterestingly absurd that he has a giant swooping U of an arm. I like that some anatomical rules are bent, but don't break them please. Blue's leg seems a bit off too.

I really like this piece and hope to see nicely polished finished product.

Also I think you should treat the testicles the same way you did the nipples, swap colors. Could even explain why the red guy is so upset. Blue balls.

Starting to work on the legs.
not saying anything else is done, but I tried addressing the hand problem not sure if I like my fix but it's a start.

Creative overall concept. The dividing whitle line on the body bugs me a little, too contrasty I guess.

But more importantly, what's up with the wang, man!? haha . . . eh, he even has opposingly colored testicles . . . and nipples. Was the artistic choice of anatomical correctness (well, down there anyway) mainly for humor and shock value? I find myself a little too distracted by it. It's a good thing this peice has other weird odd aspects, like him being a dual-faced cube-headed alien thing, that help balance the possible focus issues you've created with your risky weiner gyrating.

The presence of penis is only distracting because of our cultural biases (i.e. sex is taboo). I personally found it an interesting addition, because to me it says "this guy is so divided, even his penis doesn't know what's going on", which I find slightly clever and amusing. If it helps, you can pretend it's a small tail, like that of a hamster.

I also agree about the white line running down the body, in that it's a bit out of place. He's already two different colors, and it's very easy to see that, so further division isn't necessary.
One last thing I'm thinking is that maybe the animation is moving a little too fast? I'm pretty darned new to the world of making things move, so maybe it's good that it's fast, but I find myself staring at the red guy's arm, trying to track it's movement path and figure out just how it's moving. *shrugs*

I think the line is too contrasty, and the animation is so twitchy.

You get that penis, Atnas. You get it good.

The swoosh effect thing on the red arm looks great. That really helps clear up the issue of the path of arm movement; my eyes thank you.

I can't help but think maybe Souly meant it as more of a waving motion? The ready claw frame I pushed to two frames made me think it was how I interpreted it but maybe he meant the motion to be more like a batting? Or wait, maybe as trying to catch the butterfly with a fist? Oh well I guess Souly will clear that up. But if anything is learned I hope it's that the frames that aren't the extremes shouldn't have as much exposure because it ends up being confusing

Naw man you nailed it, I was planning to add a motion trial, I also like the edit of the open hand trying to grab it.
And for some reason I'm reminded of the Meatgrinder... memories I didn't want back. D:
Anyways, I'll look over it and either edit this post with an update later today or post again if someone posts before me.

I can't.. look.. away.  :'(

Anyways, even if this is does not qualify for the challenge, I think it would be highly worth while to polish it, and finish it, because it is wonderful, and I would be very sad to see it die.

I think the white line on the head should be removed as well. Too distracting.

Speaking of distracting, oppositely colored balls? Seems a little overkill. IMO, it looked better when they matched the main skin tones.

Hah! This is cute, man. I think you definitely addressed the issue with the leg movement.

Basically, all you really need to do now is refine, clean up the lines a bit more, fill out the shading, make the bg transparent, and there you go.

The head has been bugging me, it was seeming bouncy tell me if you like new compared to old.
Although I kind of liked the bounce it was stretching and it looked odd to me.
edit: oops loose pixel, I'll get around to it tomorrow.

You spin me right round baby right round

I love this.  Really only needs some polishing on the limbs, and maybe a broader range of values on the body.  You could use a green hue instead of a blue one for further contrast between the two sides.

Well seems imagehosts don't like my image...
So off to the FTP.
Which means this image will update constantly from overwriting it.
So I'll throw it up in the top post as well to make things easier.
