Title: Metroid Prime
Post by: zurginator on February 21, 2009, 02:55:25 am
I'm working on a sprite for MP2D.

It's obviously WIP, but yeah. C+C wanted.

Edit: Realized referances are needed around here. Refs:

Ok, that link is to your reference or just the outlines?

I still can't tell what it is. Or how it's supposed to balance on those two legs like that.

When you make concept art for something imagined you do it from several angles ( like front, top down, side, back, 3/4th view ) so the person referencing it can get an idea of the dimensions.

Without more references from different angles and more detail its impossible to really critique this.

I'm making a 2d-side view of him for a 2D sidescroller.

the middle leg should not be so far in front of him as it makes him look tremendously off balance. If this were to be a stride in a walk cycle with his right leg back more than it would look fine. I've made an edit to try and demonstrate how I think it should stand:

I just rearranged some of the pieces you made to fix some of the balance problems, you made him far to splayed out to hold his own weight. Having the leg overlap his body provides the strength to hold his body as well as creating some depth to the image. Adding the leg in the background would provide even more stability and depth. I forgot to add that while I was making the edit though.

Think of how a spider stands from the side:

The majority of his weight is being held by the 2 legs in the middle of his body. He could still probably stand if you tore his front legs off. Luckily this spider picture appears to have only 7 legs, if you remove the front 2 legs and the middle-back 2 legs you essentially get something that looks like the creature you're going for.

Hope this helps!

Don't encourage spam either!

Ontopic:
I suggest you work on a way darker background than this. It may seem okay for now, but metroid prime won't be walking on white, rather he's going to be very dark with quite strong highlights, accentuating the contours to make him stand out more.
Oh by the way, wouldn't it be better to do the prime boss head on rather than side viewed?

most bosses if not all in 2d metroids are side viewed, and judging from his ref pic his game will be similar to the rest, so a front view wouldnt work too well.

I know the MP2D project a bit, and the first boss (Parasite Queen) was placed in the back as well. And I suggest this merely because I figure it'd create gameplay closer to the actual Metroid Prime bossfight. Of course it doesn't have to be done like that, but it would require a very splendid redesigning of the boss in the current case.

I didn't know the project was that well known.  ;D
I'll talk to the team and see what they say.

Eh, fancy seeing you Zurg :p (I'm Timmehboy)
The shading's not perfect, and pillowshaded in some areas; I quite like the shading just behind the face. I would go for something a little less extreme than in Jakten's edit however.
I can just imagine Trevorius's idea in-game... good thinking.

In respose to the way it's posed, it's part based, so most of that will be programed.

MP2D officially hit the dirt today. Every active team member got perm-banned, so I don't really see much point in continuing this sprite.

Wow, excuse me for the off-topicness, but may I ask what happened?

Off topic as well, but I would assume that a project would be, well, smart enough not to base their sole form of communication in an area over which they themselves have no control. It just seems rather poorly planned. :sry:

Though this opens up great oppurtunities for yourself - to not be tied to a project which seems like what would be a giant time hog, enabling you to get down to some smaller, faster, generally more economic in terms of learning, pixel art!

Sure. A long lasting member, PY got banned. We didn't like it and said so. I got banned, Timmeh (another team member) has been suspended, CMC, Sgt Cortez, Under the ashes, and some other people left due to this, and basically all that is left is the work and the Admins that got rid of us.

Sounds like a similar case that is happening with me and another admin on another game right this moment. But I'm leaving, not getting banned.

Anyways I'm sorry for the loss, but at least, like Atnas said, you have some great new opportunities!  :)

Whoops. That's not how you make a game, folks (referring to the admins)

Anyhow, thanks for clearing that up (: I, as a moderator definately allow posts that clear up matters referring directly to the subject of the thread even though they're not art-related.

On the same note, as a moderator, I'd like to say that from this post onwards I'd like to see that all further discussion about MP2D is taken to the official off-topic thread. If zurginator wishes to continue with this piece or if you want to give critique to the piece, please go ahead and do so!

:)
