Title: 2d fighter
Post by: Sohei on February 08, 2009, 09:35:49 pm
Hi!
Today I was motivated to create a 2d fighter. It took me about 6 hours to make this stance.
Tips and critiques are welcome.

Hi, this is nice. I especially like the subtle rotation in the hands. On to the nitpicks:

Colors could use more saturation. They all lean too far towards grey currently.

The abs have too much definition. There should only be a hint of musculature.

Ankles are too thick.

You'll probably need to add a couple of frames to the animation. The forward/backward hops need extra frames to smooth the transition. A little to jerky as it is.

Vagina.  ???   :-\  :o  :-[

It lacks hip movement, coming from the waist. It looks very unbalanced as if all the chest muscles are completely tightened because the bump from back to forth is now completly ignoring motion and gravity (still talking hips/lower torso here).
Also the back foot is sliding way too much based on the amount of weight that leans on it. It should be lifted from the ground slightly to even move like that I think, which can't be with how the weight is placed right now.

Not a bad job though =)

The abs look more like scars, don't use so hard lines. Try using the lighting to give a hint of abs.
It all needs more saturation and the hair would be nicer with some more contrast.
The belt buckle seems to be moving.
The cameltoe(?) is kind of disturbing, but if you want to keep it...

A tad too defined of a camel toe going on there.

blumunkee, TrevoriuS, Emtch,
Thanks for advices. I've changed the saturation and worked over abs. I'm afraid I cant add more movement to the hips, don't know how to apply it.

personally, i'm still picking up too much abs.
but again, vagina?
what are those two white lines on her crotch?
they are very distracting.

Nice rotation on the legs. When she sets her foot down on either side there's a pretty big jump in the animation, it's worse when she moves to the left. It's also a little strange that you're using multiple rendering styles on the same image; her pants, jacket and shoes are more realistic but everything else is cell-shaded.

One-liner: Please drop the vagina-shading! It's freaking me out so much I can't even give good critique @ __ @

I too have been having problems assessing anything else on the sprite.

It seems like the shorts "blink" on the one frame when the black turns dark-grey. Oh no, the vagina is winking at me!

So, should I remove  distracting pixels from her crotch?

Here is the scetch of a punch movement. I watched a reference from SF. But still have problems with legs, lol.
Leave it as is for now.

UPD: I've cleaned the animation. Is it OK? If so, then I'll start colouring it.

You could do these pixels less distracting, I can't explain where is the light source that make that part bright that way.

Here is a coloured version of a punch animation.

I think yer doing well on this. The punch is a little robotic, not enough wind-up or follow-through. It's more like a strong jab. Seems there should be more lean-in with some upper body rotation. Punch in slo-mo, while watching yourself in the mirror. Exaggerate your movement for the sake of study. Torso still somewhat manly, it's the abs and thick waist. And I see she's still Lucy Labia, maybe she could have a vagina-based special move, perhaps the Fallopian Fireball or the Deferens of Doom, or maybe the Beaver Basher.

Okay I know you probably want an anime face, but IMO it ruins the whole piece. :/
The cameltoe highlight is wayyy un-needed.
Your girls boob is completely un-natural, doesn't really drop with the collar bone instead it tumors outwards.
Her left hand had 3 fingers...
Minor nit picks everywhere.

The finishing on this sprite might not be up to par with commercial art, but one area where I think you excelled is in creating the illusion of a three dimensional volume with your animation. It is simply incredible.

The pelvic area seems a bit too rounded though (codpiece?), and the hair is borderline dreadlocks.

I agree with Mathias, I think you must animate the hair to follow the movement of the punch.
(Sorry for my english).

Also, most boxers keep their hands loose until contact, your lady is clenching here fists the whole time.

Oh, thank you!  I'll use this edit in my further efforts.  As well as trying to loose her fists.
Damn, forgot to clean her crotch.
