Title: is it just me...?
Post by: baccaman21 on January 28, 2009, 05:50:16 pm
... or has the world gone mad?

First bobs game - and now this? (http://www.mdickie.com)

Check out the FAQ - particularly the bit about 2d art...

"How do you draw your textures for 3D games?
I use a little-known program called Painter 5. However, all you really need is a program that has a good "Airbrush" tool. That's how you achieve the realistic shading in things like faces. As for costumes, there are many templates in the bonus material of the CD version...

How do you make the graphics for your 2D games?
They were initially edited from a game called Fire Pro Wrestling. I took a screenshot, cut out the character I wanted, then edited them beyond recognition - using the original graphic as an outline. Nowadays I'm experienced enough to draw the graphics from scratch (in Microsoft Paint) so I've pretty much made the style my own..."

Well done, dude. That takes a lot of skill. Hear a professional speak and learn.

That latest game he's been working on, The You Testament, was recently reviewed here (http://www.gametunnel.com/articles.php?id=734). (There was a link today on Slashdot)

Colossal ego, small talent, everything I can't stand.

I'm tired of these clowns, are they joking or what? This guy can't be serious.

Generally I donīt want to speak bad about people, but he is pretty (too?)confident about the things he do. Thats for sure.
Somehow amusing is his "autobiography", from the text you think he works for already 20 years in the industry.
And I am pretty sure he would benefit to work in a team.

I give him some respect for working as a one man "team", but to be honest his games looks like
generic trash.
---

Didnīt know that painter is that little-known, the airbrush statement is pretty vague.
Always someone says he work proffesional with ms paint something dies in me.

I can't really find anything resembling a learning curve in the screenshots. The old games look as crappy as the new. He's probably learned to work faster and thinks that equals to improving skills.

This is so idiotic it's obviously genius. I am stunned that someone could make a game this bad, and it appears to be unintentionally so. At any point did he think that pro wrestling sounds might not fit in a game about one of history's most influential figures? The code that makes the NPCs stomp on anyone who falls down seems like a left-over from a wrestling game engine. Was he too lazy to take that out? Could he not find the code? Or even more frightening, did he think it fit the theme?

Also...karma?

Funny clip, blumunkey.  It's like hte engine explodes after Jesus raises Lazarus fom the dead. Jesus falls to hte ground nad can't get up. The NPCs run into walls and everyone randomly starts fighting.

This must be a gigantic joke. Reading his youtube profil I canīt imagine someone in his right mind can produce such
junk and talks in such big words about how great he is.

But these videos just made my day :y:

The videos.. it's like it's 1997 all over again. How can the frame rate be so low for 3d graphs that are so... bronze age.

Because he has mastered programming(self-proclaimed) and really chopped off a lot of that inefficient code :P

Wow, just wow.

DO NOT PANIC. YOUR EYES AND EARS ARE NOT DECEIVING YOU. THIS IS AN ACTUAL VIDEO GAME, MADE BY AN ACTUAL HUMAN PERSON.  IT WILL BE OKAY. YOU MAY EXPERIENCE A SENSATION SIMILAR TO THE WALLS OF REALITY BEING PULLED INTO A VOID OF UNFATHOMABLE DESTITUTION. THIS IS NORMAL. PLEASE CALL FOR HELP, WALK CALMLY AND QUIETY TO AN OPEN SPACE, LAY DOWN IN A FETAL POSITION AND WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE.

Also, take a look at the Preview sections on his website. Nearly every game has a feature, always dubbed "Courting Controversy", which places you in the pulse pounding scenario of publicly defending your intellectual property to the local federal magistrate. Truly, these inspirational works will some day herald a brave new world of gaming artistry upon the unwashed masses.

Hrmm... I note a distinct lack of controversy courting in The You Testament. Perhaps it's unlockable.

Plus the really interesting stuff seems to always be happening in the background. While the camera pointlessly sweeps around the block people's expressionless faces, a Tag-Team Rumble between the Romans and random bystanders rages.

I also like how Jesus pronounces that the leper's outer form be as pure as the leper's soul within and in THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE: "Your outer appearance was symptomatic of the corruption within."

I'm surprised noones commented on the way he used to make his graphics by ripping sprites first...

But since has 'mastered' the pixel... yup... like i've mastered flying a space shuttle by merely playing space shuttle simulator on my 286 back in 1989 in CGA...

What a nob.

Again, like bob... 100% for his enthusiasm and belief in himself... 0% in his acheivements... he's be no means a proffesional game developer despite his claims... more a high profile enthusiast who has some ok products who's getting by making some cash (kudos to him - I have a lot of respect in that sense...) however, deluding himself into thinking those of us in the sharp end of the industry are actually worried about his skills... I mean... come on - we DL'd the Jesus game... it's written in Blitz basic FFS! He'd be torn apart if he ever fancied giving up the day job and tried to join a more reputable outfit... with that skillset and that output as a profile/portfolio the code team would bin it - the art team would pi55 themselves - the design team would play frisbee with the rom... maybe that's harsh... but from my POV it's lilke some guy on youtube making a crappy movie with a Digi-cam - editing it in Vegas - and claiming to be the next hitchcock, scorsese, kubrick etc...

I'm utterly dumbfounded.

Overconfidence is a survival trait. If he survives well through his self-professed capabilities, then he's succeeded.

Generally I don't dislike Dickie. I don't know much about bob, but Dickie is doing his own thing and I don't think he owes anybody any shame for it. His games are unintentionally hilarious, but that's still more of an effect on me than say, top-shelf bullshit full 3d shooter of the month, which makes me feel absolutely nothing.

You guys laugh but unnecessary and excessive violence has long been a side affect of being in the presence of the Holy Ghost.

I feel this is false for two reasons. In a pure survival situation, overconfidence does not necessarily lead to survival. Over estimating yourself could often lead to situations where you can not survive. For instance, "can I kill and eat this sabertooth tiger?" No, the risk is not worth the reward, overconfidence would kill you. There are sexual selection situations I can see it being a positive, but overall it is worse then having the correct amount of confidence.

Second, we are not in a survival situation. The only survival we worry about is social and professional survival. Having high confidence is obviously important, but it must be within range of your actual skill. In this case, Dickie's confidence is through the roof, but his actual skill does not match. What I'm saying is that being confident in your skills is ancillary to your actual skills, and if it differs too much you risk being mocked and disliked (as I have demonstrated  ::)).

Maybe I'm reading too much into your post, but I think where we really disagree is that you think success is personally subjective, and I think it is collectively objective (not based on your opinion of yourself, but determined collectively).

Just like overconfidence can get you killed, it can also save your life in a survival scenario sometimes. Genes mutate randomly and the more survivaly ones of them carry on. I'd say on the whole everybody is more confident in their abilities/knowledge than they should rationally be. Seriously, people think they understand shit they really have no concept about. But if they were rational about their epistemological limitations, they would be frozen solid and unable to chance anything.

Everything is a survival situation. My beliefs on the subject are more nuanced than that, but at least I can give you the general idea. Everything.

It does not match I agree and it would be a problem if he worked for EA. But he's not, he works for himself. And if he's making a living and is psychologically supported by his userbase, your mock and dislike are irrelevant.

Yes on the abstract we would disagree but I don't even think he's unsuccessful by collective standards. If he's making a living being self-employed and happy about that, that sounds like success for me. He seems to invest a lot of his personal beliefs and stuff in his games too, so I wouldn't say they're bereft of human, artistic content. They're just hilariously made. Is that so bad?

I'd say overconfidence is a natural state for the mananimal while order and reason work as inhibitors for it. Things go crazy when twisted reason completely justifies the overconfidence.
There's plenty of situations that naturally give a confidence + X stat without you having to sacrifice cpu time of the insufficiently powered reason. Like having a buddy around. Probably has a lot to do with hunting for food, among other things.

Oh and evidently Bob and his loyal supporters stormed some big nintendo store in NY handing out copies of Bob's game and putting up posters.
