Hey all,
I'm working on a group activity over at pixel joint. It involves a new type of avatar where the bg is a repeating animal pattern ( 3 color ):

And the foreground is an avatar of the artist (16 color ), I used arne's palette, or at least what I think is arne's:

This is also my current working file
Nevermind the orange bar at the bottom and the palette, thats my working area since I'm using only MSPAINT for now.
Also, I'm going to fix the bg once I finish working on the avatar.

As for my working file, I could use some tips on the finer aspects of the glasses, hair, etc.. I'm not really focused on the clothing just yet, but I'll take crits on that too.

Supposed to be so tanned? To make a bit more white i'd shuffle all the skin tones a shade lighter along arnes palette. With the extra burst of red for palette interest. :hehe:

Further edit too, nitpicking but its a tough palette..

Hey dogmeat, this is coming along well. I'm working on mine too, I'll post it for crit eventually.
I made a little edit:
Raised his left eye one pixel. Right now the angle of the head does not seem to justify a one pixel drop from the right eye.
I made the ear taller. Compared to the ref, I feel you made your pixel ear too short, though not too thin.
Played around with the smile a little. I am not yet good enough to really capture your smile, but I tried to make it a little closer.

Take or leave any of this. Keep up the good work.

the ear looks like it has double sided sticky tape on the side, maybe bit of AA or something will fix that.

My wife tells me my eyes aren't squinty all the time, and they are a lot more rounded, I'll post another reference later when I get a chance and rework them.
Also, my glasses are those transitions lens, so we'll see if I can pixel that as well.

*I think you really need to fix the chin, yours is more of a bum chin :)
*What's with the gap in your lip?
*Ear needs some more definition
*Your avatar's glasses are far too thick.
I still don't get why you're using Arne's palette...but if you are going to use his palette, maybe try mixing up the colours a bit. His palette isn't really that great for achieving straight ramps.

Yeah, I reply both here and PJ, but honestly, this forum is where the action is at as far as getting good C&C in a timely fasion. Also, I think more folks here are familliar with arne's palette.
I chose that specific palette because I've always wanted a video gamey looking avatar of myself and I really think the palette is rad, the colors are just so NICCEEE!
Also, its a challenge to me, I love challenges and I feel like a pixel chemist, mixing color combos together to see what the effect is.
I wouldn't mind using another palette, or modifying this one for my needs but one of the things I'm trying not to do is go for realism and pure ramps. I look around at panda's stuff, ptoing, etc.. and they are all able to use solid colors, no dither, etc.. to achieve a nice effect, panda especially.
A lot of my stuff is messy, even all these WIPs are too messy for me.
I want it to be smooth with bold colors.
I'll keep messin, if anyone has some color suggestions, by all means.
Update: Fudged during lunch, incorporated the light red more to blend the face, lost the highlight on the forehead though because it just seems to bright.

your chinny chin-chin isnt bum-chinny enough(no offence), but then again in the first refence there was no showing of any form of bum-chinness at all, so, i would go by that instead of the second one. glasses maybe just the una(1) pixel. this palette your are going about i have no clue what its about so i wont complain bout that. and your hair doesnt seem to branch out as far as you have it
